The movie "1"     Watch it.     You'll understand my passion to make our sport (sprint car racing) as safe as possible.

Hard to beleive that still in the mid-60 seat belts were optional.

Has anyone seen the show "Grand Prix:The Killer Years"  It is an hour long, it was made in 2011 and was recorded off of the Velocity channel.  That is a very interesting documentary as well.  It sounds like "1" is basically the same thing, but possibly newer subject matter.  Very interesting and frightening stuff. I don't think it is available for purchase but you can find it on Youtube.  I have that and Senna recorded onto the same DVD.  I may have to get this one too.

"Grand Prix: The Killer Years" is a good one. Difficult to watch at times, but good.  "1" is a more intimate look at how the sport became safer.

You can also watch the movie on NBCSN,  next showing shows as Sunday June 22nd at 7 pm.  (I beleive that is Eastern time zone....not sure)

Amazon has it for $3.99/rent in HD.

Great movie,  scary to think what was considered "normal" back then.   Funny to see a young Bernie and to find out how easily/cheaply he gained his F1 fortune.  Sad to hear him and others tell about the tragedies from back then.

Thanks for that info.  I searched for it and set it up on my DVR.  Maybe I will throw all 3 mentioned onto a single disk.  Thanks again.

I would recommend you to watch the winchesters in AU, it is one of the best and my favorite movies of all time. I bet you would love the story and scripting of it.

Watch this movie and then follow it up by watching "1".

There's a doc called "the quick and the dead" which is crazy. It opens with the track worker at one of the Grand Prix races getting killed because he ran across the track trying to help a car and another car basically tore him to shreds. The driver of the car that hit the track worker was killed as well. After finishing it you'll wonder why anyone raced an f1 car in the 1970s. "1" covers a lot of the same ground but told from a modern day outlook.

Tom Pryce at Kyalami in '77. Gnarly accident. The impact with the marshal sent the fire extinguisher he was carrying over the main grandstands.

The John Gerber book is really good and details the dangers of the early years of sprint car racing.

Today's racer. Helmets that squeeze your face there so form fitting. Seats that are molded to there bodies. Drivers suits and under garments that can with stand fire for up to 1 minute in some instances. Racing shoes.

Back in the day racer. Open face L or xl  helmet, plastic shield or googles, bandana wrapped around your face. Seats in large and larger. A 2" leather belt that ran across your body from shoulder to hip. A clean white starched shirt with your best trousers and dress shoes.

Visit the indy museum and see what drivers had in personal protection it will make you appreciate what open wheel drivers risked every time they climbed in.
