Abbottstown, PA – For Phoenixville, PA native Brian Montieth, the 2014 season has been successful yet frustrating at the same time. Known as “The Edge”, Montieth’s rim riding style has consistently produced wins and championships in Central PA year in and year out, but forces beyond his control had conspired to keep race wins just beyond his reach until Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway where he won the 2014 Hilly Rife Memorial and the $5,000 payday that went with it.
The Premier Auto Works, Rider Racing Engines powered #21 XXX rolled into Lincoln Speedway already knowing their starting spot for the Hilly Rife Memorial, as time trials and heat races for the event were completed the previous week before rain washed away their chance at running the A Main. Montieth was already in a solid starting spot, having timed in 4th fastest and won his heat race, drawing him a 5th place starting spot for the feature which was to be run before the regular night of racing happened. From the drop of the green, it was clear: Montieth was going to the front. The surprising part was how he went forward…not with his trademark, on the cushion style, but rolling the low groove. Crew chief Scott Zellers had the car set up to power the bottom, and Brian did a masterful job hitting the moisture off the bottom of turn two and turn four as he moved forward. Quickly dispatching of the second through fourth place cars, Montieth reached race leader Ryan Bohlke with heavy traffic around. Not deterred, Montieth this time drove around Bohlke as opposed to underneath him, securing the lead amongst the slower traffic and using it to his advantage to build a three second margin of victory.
“We’ve had such good car speed this year that it’s been disappointing to have not won until now, but this certainly gets us on the right path” said car owner Jerry Parrish. “Scott and the guys work so hard on this thing to give Brian a great car, and Brian is always giving it his 100%. We knew once we overcame this rotten luck that we’d be back to winning a lot of races, and this should be the first of many over the summer.”
