Austin McCarl – Back in the Saddle for a Night!

(Bill W) May 29, 2014 – For one night, Austin McCarl felt at home behind the wheel of a sprint car. The excitement was evident last Sunday night when he subbed for Lynton Jeffrey at Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota.  The young Altoona, Iowa driver is still seeking a full-time sprint car ride, but for a night, it looked like he never left.  Despite a stout Huset’s field, Austin registered a heat race win and a sixth place finish behind five drivers who have wins with the World of Outlaws to their credit.

Austin was appreciative of the offer to driver the Vortex Racing #12 afforded by Jeffrey, a family friend.  “Fortunately, for me, Lynton had his son’s graduation on Sunday (at PCM High School),” he says.  “I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to drive his car for him at Huset’s.  I can’t thank him and everyone who helps out enough for the chance to get back in the seat for a night.”

Austin would time in ninth quick.  “It was awesome,” he says.  ::It was really fun.  It felt so good to be back.  I felt a little rusty hot lapping and qualifying.  I didn’t turn the greatest laps, but we bounced back in the heat.”

He would go on to win his heat race.  “We started up in the front row in clean air,” says Austin.  “We were able to win the start.  It was good for me to be out front in clean air and leading a race again. To win something was really cool.  I hadn’t been in a car for nine months.”

Austin would start seventh in the main event.  “Unfortunately, we drew a six instead of an eight for the feature invert,” he says.  “An eight would have put us on the front row.  We started seventh, and we rode around there for a while.  I had a good race with Derrik Lusk there for a few laps.  We were able to get into sixth.”

The sixth place run was great, considering it was Austin’s first race in 2014.  “It felt like I hadn’t missed a beat really,” he says.  “Without the rust, I may have had something for (Justin) Henderson up in top five, but it felt great.  He was in the same straightaway as us at the end.  It makes me wish someone would hire me!”

Considering the competition assembled at Huset’s this season, Austin’s run was a solid one on any night.  “Normally, I’d be pretty upset to run sixth,” he says.  “But the top five cars…Henderson, Dollansky, Terry McCarl, Ian Madsen and Mark Dobmeier…they’re all Outlaw caliber drivers who have beat them.  They’ve been racing all year, and they’ve all been fast and up front at Knoxville, which is the toughest weekly show in the world right now.”

It was great to see Austin back at Huset's.

By the time the feature came around it looked like he had been racing all year.

Sure would be great if he had a ride.   Even if it was a car that never seems to have a permanent driver.
