Here is an ad for a 305 engine shop and there parts kit for building your own 305. You cant build a 360 or 410 for this kind of money.

Premium Package:
CNC Machined 2 pc Seal - 305 Block With American Made Splayed 4 Bolt Main Caps
ARP Hardware
4340 Fully Balanced Rotating Assembly
SRP Forged Flat Top Pistons With Rings File Fit
King Rod And Main Bearings
1 Pair Of Racer Heads

$4,499.95

Seems like a decent deal for what is almost a long block. I have some questions. Does the block include cam bearings and freeze plugs? Were the oil galleys brush cleaned, tapped and Allen plugs installed? Were all the sharp edges, and in particular the main webs, smoothed and radiused to eliminate stress risers? Is that legal? Is the pump drive plug at the rear cam bearing included? Which ARP hardware? Head bolts? Head studs? Front cover and pan bolts? Are the heads complete or bare?

Other parts needed to complete:

Cam (broached for pump drive), lifters, pushrods, rocker arms, valve covers,  breathers

Timing chain, sprockets, crank key, front cover

Water pump, harmonic balancer, water pump drive

Pan, oil pump, oil filter

Fuel injection, fuel pump, pill holder, high speed bypass, low speed bypass, pills, stacks, air filters, hoses

Vertex mag, wires, spark plugs

Gaskets, nuts, bolts, washers

What did I miss?

Depending on what kind of deal you can get, I think this list is at least another 5 to 6000 dollars. Looks like a $10,000.00 motor to me (if you do the labor yourself).
