Yo' Sammy apologist, I remember what happened, I may still even have a VCR copy of the race. Droud flipped, Sammy stopped to avoid him and Mark didn't stop without collecting Sammy. Sammy's comment when asked about the incident was "He's been doing that all year." The original post about Sammy and Mark was another Swindell apologist making an excuse of "Sammy would have won if..." After the race, Swindell nearly ran Lasoski's crew over and then told Karl that if Sammy and Karl teamed up, they'd never lose a race. Swindell is a Hall of Famer and his record speaks for itself, yet at the biggest race in sprint car racing, he doesn't get it done. Sammy had a great year in 1997 but remember that he only won the driver's side of the point championship. Mark missed a handful of races when he was trying to run NASCAR Supertrucks and Karl won the owner's championship with Kelly Kinser filling in when Mark was absent. Kelly even parked the 5m in Victory Lane at least once.

Good knowledge, thanks! I'm not a Sammy fan either, but I am awed by the guys success and the genius of some of the cars he's built over the years. He's never been afraid to try different things - independent front end, coil over fronts, the midget fuel tank, wrap around dash that's very similar to what the KKR cars run now. The TMC car from 92-93 is still one of my all-time favorite cars, I just don't root for the driver. Threadkiller is right, Sammy is clearly cursed at Knoxville, but all of his apologist fans are quick to point out the "what if's" when racing is all about the numbers and results. During the 1999 Knoxville telecast, there was a segment asking fans who they thought would win. There was a guy who said it best: "Probably Sammy but I'd rather see someone else". I still laugh at that.

West Plains was a beauty, only got there the one time that Kelly won but I remember Jac had it won and somehow it didn't happen. Wish I could have seen a few more shows there, loved it.....

Back to the original topic, I wish the WoO would go back and retroactively adjust the win totals. I would concur to not count split field prelim wins, but Kinser and Swindell must have hundreds of WoO wins that aren't counted in their total.
In addition, with Schatz taking over 3rd place in the WoO win list this year (he's 3 away) would be a good time to readjust Mark Kinser's total to give a true indication of total wins. It's a part of their history that's unaccounted for currently, and would make those records even more unbelievable than they already are.

Typical Sammy fan, always blaming someone else. If you're referring to Mark's record at Knoxville, that would be three time Nationals champion Mark Kinser and single time champion Sammy Swindell.

ha I like Sammy but not a huge fan of his. Just stating the fact like everyone else here did. I was there in 1997 at 8 years old. I remember the night before with the storms and coming back on Sunday night. Sammy had the silver car and was checked out. I remember him having to go to the back with the blue wing back on.
