Sweet has same # top 5's, same # top 10's, one more QT, and one more win and yet he is 34 points behind Schatz...
One can only imagine the overwhelming confusion, head scratching, and denial this must be causing for some individuals.

I think Schatz has had more donuts. That is the difference.

Anyone who is scratching there heads just needs to look at all the finishes. Not just the wins and top 5's and top 10's. Schatz has actually finished a total of 20 spots ahead of Sweet over the course of the whole year considering Sweet has 3 finishes 20th or worst and Schatz worst finish is 15th once.
Sweet Schatz
1. 1 12 -11
2. 6 1 -5
3. 4 3 -4
4. 3 6 -6
5. 7 1 0
6. 1 5 -4
7. 23 2 +17
8. 5 15 +7
9. 21 2 +26
10 7 6 +25
11 1 4 +22
12 2 9 +15
13 20 5 +30
14 3 6 +27
15 4 11 +20

I don't think the point system is broken, the bottom line is that Donny has "outperformed" Sweet on the track with other cars to race against.
He did the same last year with Pittman, the thing is that he outpointed Pittman in points earned while RACING, Pittman outpointed Schatz only during qualifying.
Was the system broke? somewhat, but not to the extent others thought it was.
IMO, the biggest issue remains that there is ZERO incentive for the fast cars to pass anyone during a heat (get 1st,2nd or 3rd quick at 90% of the shows and all you have to do is "maintain" your heat race position to lock yourself into the top 6 starting spots in the main.
Do away with the dash completely and award points for finishing and passing in the heats. Top point guys start up front in the main (fully invert the heats and give 20 points to win, 18 for 2nd and down by 1 point from there on back, but give 1 point for every position advanced from the starting line-up (so a guy starting 8th that gets up to 5th and "barely" transfers to the main would have 18 points (same as a guy that started 2nd and finished 2nd in their heat).
Tie-breakers in points awarded to those that passed the most cars. 2nd tie-breaker by time-trial.
Make the cars "race" to make the feature, not just maintain their position. The current dash format is even WORSE than the old dash format as now those that time in 4th-9th most nights and 3rd-13th on the nights with 4 heats are even worse off than they used to be.

pitman did get his points racing. he was racing the clock, just like everyone else had to do.
to be the champ you have to perform in all aspects.
pitman didn't make his points against donny last year by qualifying. he only out pointed him around 180-190 points in that aspect.
where pitman got donny was the finishes in the catagory of 2nd-5th place finishes. you can't go just off of top 5's because two guys might have the same number of top 5 finishes, but one has mostly 2nd and 3rds and the other 4ths and 5ths. those points between 2nd and 5th really add up. pitman actually out pointed donny by over 2000 pts in that aspect, making up the advantage in points donny had on him from wins. i'm not saying the qualifying didn't help, but it isn't what made the difference. also donny was slow to start racking up points last year and just ran out of time.
to be the champ you have to beat the champ. got to give pitman credit last year.
to indy and beyond!!

Thanks fivectydirttracker. And Curt, it just hit me that this could turn into one of "those" threads. It seemed like the right place for a little humor.
