Wednesdays with Wayne – Evading Florida Rain!

(Bill W) February 12, 2014 – A trio of rainouts preceded two shows at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Florida last weekend.  Rainouts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday prompted race officials to reschedule for Sunday and Monday.  Wayne Johnson and the #77x team were finally able to get their season started after the wait.  Last night, they practiced at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida in anticipation of five nights of racing there.  Tonight’s event has already been rained out, and the team will try again tomorrow.

When things got underway on Sunday night in Ocala, the lingering moisture was an issue.  Wayne qualified fifteenth, and won his first heat race of the year.  “The car was good in the heat,” he says. “The track was obviously throwing a lot of mud around.”

The Knoxville, Iowa driver started inside row seven for the feature.  He would pull off at about the midway point and be scored seventeenth.  “We were running around eighth or so, and I just pulled in,” says Wayne.  “It was getting tough out there to say the least.  It was just a tough track to move forward on.”

Things didn’t start out as well on Monday.  “We didn’t qualify well (21st) Monday night,” says Wayne.  “We tried something that just didn’t work.  Sometimes that happens.  We learned from it and moved on.”

After moving from seventh to sixth in his heat, Wayne started 20th in the feature and found speed as the race went on.  “We started twentieth and got up to fifteenth,” he says.  “We were coming.  (Kerry) Madsen (the leader) showed me a wheel and I let him go.  I didn’t want to be in the way.  Once he got by us, no one passed us, so that showed me that we were pretty good at that point.”

With tonight’s event washed out at Volusia, it leaves four nights, Thursday through Sunday. Thursday night’s event is sanctioned by the All Stars, while the rest will serve as the initial 2014 events for the World of Outlaws.  The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team used last night as a test session.  “We were a couple of tenths off in practice last night,” says Wayne.  “We changed motors today to try and gain some speed.  The car felt really good.  We’re still tuning it in.  It was really heavy in practice and wide open.  We’ll get it dialed in.”
