I just wanted to pass on that the folks at Dirtvision saw my question about streaming their broadcast on the Linux operating system and offered me the opportunity to give it a test drive.  Us Linux folks are the one percenters of the computer world so we occasionally run into issues when sites are designed specifically for Windows and Mac.  YouTube works on Linux as well as many of the news sites but Netflix does not work on my system so I was hesitant to purchase any broadcasts until I knew for sure that Dirtvision works.

I'm running version 12.04 of the Linux Ubuntu Studio OS on a beefed up Dell Optiplex with the Firefox browser and am happy to report that Dirtvision works great.  There probably aren't many fellow penguin heads out there but if anyone running Linux is wondering if they should take a chance on Dirtvision it should work provided you've got all the codecs loaded and your browser is up-to-date.

A big thank you to Dirtvision for allowing me to be the first to test their streaming video feed in Linux.

Hey Stan, glad to see your surviving our winter this year. I am well south of you but we got over 60 inches of snow so far and are below zero once again. See you at the track in a few months.

This has been a tough winter for sure.

Sorry I must've missed your question re: linux. Dirtvision has worked fine for me as does The Cushion broadcasts from Knoxville. I use the exact same version of Ubuntu and have been using Ubuntu for almost 8 years actually . So much better than Windose. Of course you have to work your way around certain compatibility issues but with software such as WINE you can emulate Windows enough to run some Windows based software. Netflix doesnt work on Ubuntu because its based on the Silverlight encoder, thats a Macrosoft build and they just dont support open source operating systems that work better than their crap.  I would like Dirtvision support for raspbmc. Its a lightweight linux operating system that I run on my $40 rapsberry pi computer for all my TV based multi media needs. You should check out the raspberry pi, its pretty amazing what it can do for such a small amount of money.

Cheers!

I watched the Stockton WoO show at a friends house last year on her big screen and it worked good the entire show. Outside of my host and her mother being at eachother's throats when I got there the night was flawless!

My PC bit the dust last fall so I picked up a free Dell from a friend, slapped my 1tb & 320 mb drives and media card reagers in.  Ordered 2 more gigs of memory and picked up a USB wireless keyboard and mouse because the Dell doesn't use PS2.  Total spent on this box, $73.  Loaded Ubuntu Studio (I write and record tunes using an electric guitar, bass, and keys run through a multi effects pedal).  This distro comes with Hydrogen drum machine, Audacity, Gimp, Open Shot Video Editor and a ton of other cool open source programs.  I installed Wine and run Photoshop 7, Paint Shop Pro 8, Noise Ninja and a photo gallery generator for my racing photo gallery.  All run flawlessly.  The BlueGriffon website editor works for my racing site and I'm looking into starting a Reverbnation page so I can post some of the tunes I have been recording.  I'm getting some pretty decent sound for a $73 box.  Here's a sample of something I threw together in the man cave on New Years weekend.  www.gotomn.com/misc-temp/Goodbye 2013.mp3

No extra expense for antivirus or spyware and I'm not forced to constantly spend money to upgrade programs.  I make a decent living but we're a one income household so I'd rather put $1,000 into chasing races this summer than into computer equipment.  I don't work in tech at my day job but I have messed with them enough to know how to throw a box together.  As you point out Henry, getting setup on Linux requires some tweaking and learning some command line stuff in terminal but once it's up and running they'll generally run trouble free until the hardware fails.  I'll never got back to mainstream computing.  wink
