There is an interesting story in the January 2007 issue of Car and Driver magazine about a writer and photographer who went to this year`s Knoxville Nationals. They drove a new 500hp Mercedes Benz ML63 AMG towing a new 20 foot Airstream trailer. It is about Knoxville as much as it is about the King Kong SUV and trailer. It is worth checking out for any sprint car fan. They explain in detail what it is like in Knoxville and the food for sale in Knoxville during the Nationals. It starts on page 114 and is called The Other Knoxville.

Sometimes the man or woman you are talking to from across your street side picnic table is much bigger than you assume. If they want some real BBQ there are a few places.
Main Street Cafe BBQ
The BBQ over by the Train tracks (just south of the main entrance) And this year I found a guy in the middle on Hy Vee parking lot in a Box van I believe. I want to say this as non race as possible but he was a black guy in a White Box van, I believe. The Guy had Pulled Pork Sandwiches made by God himself. Who cares about race. If a black guy can make it better, than I am in his hands!!!! Just discribing the guy who made it and had the stand. Good Bless that guys Pork Sandwich!!

I had a couple from the "white box van", not too bad.... You folks up there don't know what good BBQ is.
While at the Chili Bowl, go to Elmer's "It Be Bad" BBQ (not kidding on the name)....

I guess that we need to start the "annual" post on here on all of the great places to eat in T-Town.

Keep in mind when i read this thread last night I had a few glasses of cheap scotch. but it seemed to make sense my post.

Dude, you need to meet up with me and RebelBubba. Our Chili Bowl trip revolves around racing and eating!

I will be with Hose_60 and maybe his dad....My trip will end up mostly around eating with those two mama jamas. I just need to keep my distance so I don't get eaten.
But yeah, I will gladly meet up with you. Hose and I plan to wear shirts atleast one night at the Bowl With our names from here on them. So i am ready for the random punches to the face from strangers

Phenix City Alabama, The Smokey Pig. Heard he also has one in Columbus GA across the river. Vinegar and mustard sauce, cooked over a wood fire in the building - constantly basting it with the sauce. Never had the stuff before, or found it anywhere else since but it is addictive! Hope the C&D article isn't written by east coast elitists that think race fans are all bubbas. Bought the book "Sunday Money" by one of those NYC writers. Spent a year following NASCAR and starts off putting everyone down pretty badly, grudgingly admits they're okay by the end.

It's a pretty entertaining read, and it really is about 2 guys going to Knoxville in a highly unlikely combination of RV and tow rig.
Yes, they come off as a little elitist, but one gets the impression that it was more about the intended audience than the author or photographer in question.
Best line:
'A 4 day grandstand seat is $148.00 to $173.00, one of lifes last great deals'

As far as the story being written by someone who looks down on race fans goes, he pointed out that sprint car fans cannot be dumb because they understand the four day qualifying system that filters the 124 car field down to 24 cars for the Saturday night main event. The working title for the story was,"What`s The Most Fun You Can Have During One Week In August?" He said that Knoxville during race week turns into sort of a pork-and-soybean Mardi Gras. They seemed to be having fun. The bad ass Mercedes that they had puts out 503hp, does the quarter mile in 13.2 seconds at 107 mph and has a top speed of 155 mph. (governor limited) The Merc and the Airstream combined sell for something over $126,000. That is the kind of stuff you see in Car and Driver. But it is a good sprint car story too.
