1990 holds a special place in my heart. I was an 18 year old kid and got the make my first Nationals trip with my dad. Unbelievable week of racing. Wolfgang was incredible, and getting to see Bobby Allen drive by Sammy and pull that off....never forget it. Another unforgetable moment, watching Steve's first lap of Heat 1 on Wednesday. He was QT putting him at the tail of that first heat.... had the lead heading in to three.

Me too, turned 16 just a few weeks prior to Nationals that year (first year of true "freedom" during the best week of the year).
The entire week had awesome racing and Doug running the alphabet (D, C, B and A) along with Scruffy winning the finale is still etched in my mind.
As much as people don't like him, I think Schatz has the opportunity to become a "hero" if he ever has to run the alphabet (D, C, B and A). Even in today's age of store-bought cars, parts and pieces, I truely believe he could actually win from the D-main on Saturday night.

I hate to say it but I bet you're right about Donny being able to move way through the alphabet.
Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.

Thank you for posting that. I bought the official Diamond P videotape from the NSCHoF many years ago and was very disappointed when they skipped the B main completely! It was right after Doug got burned in KC and I am sure that Ted Johnson and politics had something to do with the ommision.

Wolfie ended up about 4th or 5th.
It was the year that everyone was popping motors. Once he got into about 5th, the car was obviously overheating and getting tired.....Sammy was smoking bad the last 8 laps or so and I am still convinced if he woulda blew up enough to cause a red flag, Doug could have cooled it off and won the thing.
I will never forget that night. Steve K blowing up, Mark K dropping out while leading, I think Blaney blew up. Sammy's crew throwing tear-offs at him under caution. (didn't work so well and should have resulted in the 1 car being DQ'd IMHO) Scruffy and Sammy trading spots with Sammy bouncing off of the wall because he couldn't see. Sammy grumpy as hell giving a classic Ahole interview on the frontstretch after the race.

never would " I " say donny could not come from the D to show or even WIN the nationals. As I see it a driver, team or both Williams,Wolfgang ; K. Kinser, S. Kinser; Stewart. Donny S., are all combos that have broke the bank and, made fans out of first time race goers!
And that my friends, warmes my muddy heart!
Happy holidays & Great New Year !
Peace, Out.

Ok, I'm 40 and admit I've never watched the old Diamond P video of the 1990 nationals. After watching the B-main, I went to you tube and watched the D, C and A mains. Wow! Now I understand why so many people consider the 1990 nationals one of the best Saturday nights at Knoxville ever! What Wolfie accomplished is amazing and probably couldn't be duplicated today. But watching Scruffy win was exciting to watch and it happened 23 years ago. Tim Schaffer winning a few years ago was just as good of an A-main IMHO. But the D, C and B is no comparison - 1990 gets my vote.
