I was born in 76 and both sides of my family owned cars and raced. To me racing was alot different then than it is today. i remember as a kid, that its was like a big community of racers and fans having a great weekend, then all of a sudden a race broke out. If they could somehow tap into those days again, get more fans involved during the week, with such activites as parades and such, would be good for the sport again. It was much more then just the racing, but those who were around then, still claim those were the golden years of the sport.... Hard to argue that with everything that went on.

I was about 5 so 1980 or 1981 at Husets. Not sure what fuel they ran, but it smelled great. If Wolfie was there, all eyes were on him to come from the back. 50 cent box of popcorn; we would run down the walkway to and from the concessions pretending to have our own race. A couple of guys, Marlon and Don Jones and Rick Dump would let me sit in the car as they pushed it up onto the open trailer... talk about a thrill! Was hooked hard for the next 20 years. I still get to one or two a year and still get the same thrill from a sprint car.

I was born into it. If you lived in my family, you went to the races every Saturday night...I never remember not going to the races.

That's my story too. My earliest memories are being in the stands at the Ditch in West Memphis at five years of age with my fingers in my ears cause the cars were so dang loud! I guess you could even say I was hooked by the great Hooker himself!

I lived in Western PA, just outside of Pittsburgh, and my father took me to my first dirt track that had just opened up in 1978 called Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. I was about 14 years old, and the first car that I saw when we walked up into the grandstands was Lou Blaney in the Crash Bros. #10 sprinter. They were still running non-wing at that time, and I couldn't believe the sounds and smells and speed that was coming out of those cars. I was hooked when the 24 car feature started and Lou Blaney won the race. At that time, my Dad told me that he had been a part owner of a sprint car before I was born, that was driven by Dale Johnson and Dave Lundy (the Deuce #2), and that one of their main competitors was Lou Blaney.
So, the next weekend, he took me to Lernerville Speedway, and I really fell in love with that track. We would hardly miss any race there in the following 10 years! That first night at Lernerville, they ran seven divisions of race cars, and Lou Blaney won in both his sprinter and his big-block modified, further cementing him as my first "hero".
Then, the next year, the WoO made their first appearance at Lernerville, and my next hero became Sammy Swindell. He was running away with the race in the Federal Express #91 sprinter before he burned a fork in the rear-end, and Steve Kinser inherited the win.
This is a great thread that is bringing back all of those great memories when my Dad (now decessed) and I traveled all over the country following the WoOs.
Those were the best times of my life!

I also have great memories of going to the track with my dad on so many nights. I notice that you live in Austin. I live in Dallas myself. Just curious what you do now for your sprint car fix now as I'm assuming there's not much of anything around Austin? Do you go to ASCS regionals in Waco or Houston? Devils Bowl? Can't wait to see the WoO again at the Bowl!
My big problem is I really don't care for 305 sprints. I like ASCS and am grateful the National series comes around periodically since we haven't had 410s around here in years. Another problem for me is the tracks around here that host ASCS regional races and make you sit through six or seven other classes. I can't handle that, so I stay home. I don't mind sitting through another class or two when I go to see sprints, but sprints are the only things worth watching for me. You could take every late model and IMCA modified in the country and put 'em in a pile and burn 'em and I'd be happy to light the fire! I really enjoy going to Knoxville because that's all you see is sprints. Sure wish Texas had something like that.

Looks to me like we have the same problem on this board that we have in the grandstands, a bunch of old farts! lol

That's a valid point I suppose. You do see that at a lot of tracks. I was encouraged to see a good deal of young people in the stands at Knoxville. Maybe in some areas of the country it's not just us old dudes. I think the sport definetly has the same capability to hook young people that it had when it hooked us! I'm not sure why it's not happening in some areas though.

I almost forgot, thanks to the development of some amazing apps im on my phone in between races when im at the races. Please don't take this post as disparaging to the original post about phones. I was just pointing out that my phone has greatly enhanced my passion for sprint car racing. Sorry for the interruption, now back to your original programming.

I was basically referring to the no mind 'kids' that have nothing better to do, while you are having lunch with them no less, to hang on the damn thing like they are alone. I have a 'no phone zone' in my downstairs 'mancave'. You want to be on the phone down there, you will be asked ONCE, to put it away. @nd time you are told to leave. Time and a place.....
