Since 1973 this will be my 31st Turkey Night Grand Prix that includes 15 at Ascot Park Gardena, 13 at Irwindale, and 2 at Perris Auto Speedway.
How many have you attended?

From the other side of the spectrum, this will be my first - along with my wife and 5 year old son. Hopefully this is the start of a new tradition for us!

Don Zabel has been to every T/N since 1934 except the war years.

Which means he didn't miss anything since the race was not run in '42, '43 or '44.

my first one was 1972.....think it was Bubby's win in the mid 1970's that I missed as I was out of town that day/evening, after that made most of the Ascot races and the one at Speedway 605 in 1975, after being rained out that Thursday, rain date was the following Sunday afternoon, where Mel Kenyon won his 2nd Turkey night race.... Saw all of Ron Shuman's wins, including the one where fog almost cut the race short....sitting in turn 1, lost sight of the cars just after the scoreboard and didn't see them again until they were coming down the front straight...was odd hearing them, but not seeing them. In the 1980's may have missed some, due to personal things....Was there for the final one at Ascot in 1990, again camped in turn 1....Think there was only one time I sat in my usual front stretch spot for the race at Ascot....
Last one I attended was the 2000 version at Irwindale when Tony Stewart won....
After that race, bought a 1/24th scale diecast of a version of the car Stewart would run at various midget races....
Went by his pits to see if I could get him to sign it, but when I saw the line, I wasn't sure if I was going to wait that long. But then someone changed the course of the line I was suddenly less than 10 away from getting an autograph....so yes, got him to sign it.....
Before going to Stewart's pit area, bought Mel Kenyon's book and had him autograph it. He missed the cut for the main event. Was also sad to see NO ONE around his pit, just to even talk to him....
Yeah, I miss that race

I imagine Mel has signed more than his share of autographs over the years. He's the driver that first comes to mind when ever I think of midget racing. I'd like to see his career stats so I guess it's time to start searching the net.
