Newberrytown, PA – On the last Saturday of racing in Pennsylvania for 2013, Derek Sell brought home $10,010 at Susquehanna Speedway Park. For Sell, it was his first victory in the 410 wars in PA, coming in only his second race this season.
2013 has been a year of change for Derek and Rob Sell. Derek spent most of 2013 focusing on his studies at Penn State, as he works toward a mechanical engineering degree while father Rob brought Fred Rahmer and Moon Byers to the Sell Racing team as the driver and head mechanic, respectively. After 7 wins (including the National Open) and track titles at Lincoln and Williams Grove, Rahmer retired, leaving the seat of the Ott powered #20s Triple X open for the final two races of the season, at The Grove and Susquehanna. The opportunity for father and son to race together was too good to pass up, and Derek jumped back into the car with great success on night one, passing 13 cars in the main event at The Grove while still shaking off some rust. This past Saturday night, Derek was on his game, leading all 30 laps of the main event, turning back challenges left and right on his way to his first win, including a last ditch slidejob by Logan Schuhart which Sell countered with a crossover on the white flag lap.
“I don’t have words, this is so surreal. It’s incredible to be part of a team with Fred and Moon” said Derek in victory lane. “We were fortunate going out 21st for time ins to get 6th quick, which had us on the pole for the main. It was actually fairly easy but at the ten to go point, I was exhausted. Started missing marks and missing my entry, but when we got the two to go signal, I got a burst of adrenaline and that helped me through. I was fortunate to have built such a big lead, and that’s really a credit to the guys working on the car. Both times I’ve raced this year, the car has just felt amazing.” The win was the richest in Susquehanna Speedway Park history, and will propel the father and son duo into the offseason where they will lay plans for their 2014 schedule.
