I really enjoyed watching the Outlaws race this morning on ESPN 2. I thought the wave that TMac did to Schatz was very funny. I must admit I wasn't too sure about TMac after his comments at Tulare in February. I was at that race and I think his tone and what he said about Saldana was very rude and I can understand why the crowd bood him during his interview. I also understand that he loves to speak his mind and try to be funny at the same time. He knows sprint cars need more recognition in racing and he is doing his best to make it an exciting show. As a Brent Kaeding fan I respect people who speak their mind, even though it might be controversial.
Looking forward to the new Golden State King of the
West series schedule!
Winged sprintcars = the fastest and most exciting
racecars on dirt!

I thought the crown barely fit Donny ! ha ha ! In reality, and personal opinion Ive seen Donny race throughtout his career, his talent behind the wheel has proven to capitalize , is first couple years were a "few steps forward and a few bent parts back" granted he was young, as, its alot to take in as a adult running a 360, let alone, a 15 year old ! , the endless supply of money and equipment means you can make alot of mistakes and afford to learn from them , Now, just how many mistakes does he make today? not much! my plublic opinion of Donny is, Behind the wheel he is purely talented , when the microphone is in his face , just plug your ears, your not going to hear a entertaining interview on a positive note from Donny , I use to really frown on Donny, only because I could base my thoughts off his interviews , he did make one comment , last season, something to the effect of " my interviews are terrible, but, when I put that helmet on, im in my place" nuff said, and youve got my respect Donny, Work on the PR you'll get a boatload of your fans back , heck, half of them are just waiting in line for a beer , all aboard!

I'm not a fan of T-Mac but the wave and the interview during the fuel stop except for the winking was tremendous. Those Outlaw officials couldn't ask for a worse personality to put up front to promote their sport than Schatz.

I thought the wave was awsome. I think in today's day and age racing is hurting, both for fans and drivers. This whole TV deal is great. I think T-mac's personality, is something this sport needs. Yeah it was a little goofy, and the wave was just down right funny. I have a feeling that not only Terry McCarl mades some fans but also the sport of Sprint Car racing prolly gained some new fans from the tv deal. I also lost all of my respect for Donny Schatz.

I thought Mr. McCarls wave was excellent for television, and his comments during his interview were quite respectful of Mr. Schatz after the race. As far as Mr. Schatz being the next king, you must remember he can't seem to get out of his own way when he ran without a wing.....Mr. Kinser was awesome without a wing.

K'Ville and KC were T-Mac's first wins on tv. Makes me wonder if he would have been so jovial had he won some a few years earlier!?
I agree a personality like that is just what the WoO needs to gain some more fans.

Sprintman11, you're probably crying because he beats your boy about every night these days and let me give you some first hand info. Danny Schatz is a wonderful man, great sense of humor excellent businessman and a big fan of Steve Kinser who jumped on me a bit last year when I was complaining about the NST in conversation with him. Diane Schatz has more personality and fun than any other woman on the tour I think, she is a blast. Donny is Donny, painfully shy until he knows you and then he holds nothing back, a great conversation and he's told me some great stories, heck how can you be mad/jealous at asomebody who LOVES racing at the Grove, lol.
Terry sometimes rubs people the wrong way (boy can I relate) but he means well and is just an 'Excitable Boy' as Warren Zevon might say. He is likely the best spokesman for sprint car racing on the World of Outlaw tour and one of the nicest, most genuine, charitable guys out there. You all wished you had friends like these four people and you probably do, take it from somebody in the first person. Take It Easy....

I must have been watching a different show. I watch for the RACING, not to judge everyones personality. Schatz is currently the best sprint car RACER in the world. I thought McCarls wave was bush league & during his camera time he makes an ass of himself, he might have broke Dudes record for winks at the camera during a single interview. Schatz might not have an electric personally, but he did come up with the best quote, "I guess it was good for those guys they need a win every 6 months or so".
|
Agreed. Ok, so McCarl gives him a wave during the race. That takes some balls to do, and it almost blew up in his face. A couple more laps, and Schatz could very well have been the winner. I think the wave was gutsy, funny and entertaining. McCarl messes with his head, admits it and goes on to win. Then they interview Schatz during the red flag and he's pissed. Sounds like he's whining. Come on people, do you really think he is going to be happy go lucky and laugh about what just happened? We all know Schatz is one of the most determined and focused drivers out there. Of course he is going to be pissed! Then after the race he's still pissing and moaning about it.....of course, he lost! Got flat out beat! Then T-MAC gives him a kiss!!!! Classic!!!! Then you could see the smile on Donny's face. Too bad it takes a kiss from McCarl to make they guy smile! At the end of the day it was all good. So what if Schatz seems to be whinny in some cases. If it isn't him whining, then it will be someone else whining. Seems not too many years ago Lasoski was the whinner on the tour. Schatz is one of the best to sit behind the wheel of a sprint car. Like it or hate it, that's the truth. The comment about winning every 6 months or so was pretty clever too, since that is almost the truth with McCarl. Everybody just let it go. It was a good race that gave us all entertainment. What more do we as fans want from a race?

Pretty clear to me, some of the fans know these guys and their families up close and personal whereas others only from a distance.

Maybe .... just maybe .... it's not a big deal to either one of those two. I couldn't help notice a grin from Schatz when McCarl kissed him. Heat of the moment adrenaline rush... from the "wave" to the "comments" my guess and it's prolly all blown over by now. (If there was ever anything to get blown over to start with.)

Im proud to say that I have NEVER supported Crybaby Donny and WILL NEVER support his babyish antics! This month of money program on ESPN 2 I hope has opened some eyes as to who the real Donny schatz is! Nothing more than a spoiled lil baby who has gotten what he wants because of who his parents are!! And no....he will NEVER be the NEW King. I dont see him winning 20 WoO Championships nor winning over 530 WoO feature events. It might be true about the old saying," Nice guys finish last..", but nice guys have more fans and sell more t-shirts!! Get a life Donny and grow up!! Im not a huge McCarl fan either(as seen by my signature), but I found it rather amusing when he waved bye-bye to Donnie!!
Proudly supports:
Logan Seavey, Corey Day and "Big Sexy" Brandon Overton

Oh dear. Now to keep this in proper perspective and so it doesn't get blown way of proportion, think about this for a second.
I can't imagine any serious racer enjoying getting second. Who would be dumb enough to walk up to a a racer and say, atleast you got second. For any serious racer, second isn't good enough, only first is, that's just the nature of a talented racer. Gee, I can remember some of the times when they stuck a mike in the faces of the "Big Three" when they didn't come in first. To bad we can't go back and see reruns of their interviews when they came in second. Can any of you remember those interviews? I bet you can.
Donny seems to be the one some people are loving to hate right now. Certain fans can be so fickle sometimes. Instead of judging Donny on his racing record they judge him on his interviews because his racing record speaks for itself, so all they have left, is to attack him personally and his family. Heck, if the "Big Three" were only judged on their interviews I guess their proven track records would count for nothing right now too, so I'd say right now Donny Schatz is in great company, if you are just judging him by his interviews What a silly argument.
I could be wrong here, but in my opinion, some of the fans are the biggest "cry Babies", could be, there boy isn't even in the top two. For them, that is something to cry about
Even though I'm a Schatz fan, I cheer for whoever is in the winners circle. They deserve it and have won my respect, even the ones I don't naturally care for. The hand gesture T-Mac gave Donny Schatz was a little arrogant but it did make me laugh
I say, keep the pressure on Donny and win another "Championship" this year!
Hope this puts things in perspective for you. In my opinion certain fans need to grow up.

I'm not a Schatz fan, but it didn't sound like whining. It looked like two guys messing with eachother. I didn't like McCarl after Tulare, but the race at k-c made me laugh. And he was sitting not too far from me in the pits watching the other heat races at Oshweken, which was pretty cool. He's definitely not shy. Personally I like Justin Henderson, and I really hope he can improve and become a bigger name in the coming years. But McCarl definitely has a little more of my respect.

Tinybubbles - Don't let the fear of people sending you emails keep you from posting here. I have been a member of this messageboard since it's inception (over 10 years). I have my enemies here, but I can count on 2 hands the number of emails I have recieved over the years here. Half were hatemail from MSPN and the other half being about racing.
Silvercrownfan - I think it is no secret that Schatz will be under the TSR banner in 2008. I think I am the only person on this board who heard Tony's comparison to Schatz over the radio when he took the checkered flag 2 weeks ago at Chicago.
As far as Donny and his personality (or lack thereof), I really can not say much. In that area, he remindes me of my favorite driver (Sammy Swindell). I have always said, if I want personality, I tune to Leno or Letterman, if I want a sprint car driver, I watch Sammy. BUT, I have never really caught on to Donny, even though he is a great talent, I guess it all stems from an incident back in 1999 in Topeka. My wife, who was just starting to gain interest in the sport was wanting to find a "favorite driver", and you know how women can be, she went up to him after the races after buying a shirt, just to shake his hand and have the shirt signed, it was a complete disaster. Needless to say, she doesn't like Danny...LOL.
One last thing, I really have to laugh at the people that like to call Donny the "new" or "next king". To do so, just shows stupidity, this coming from a Sammy Swindell fan. Call Donny the best driver there is this year (which he obviously is), but PLEASE, do not tarnish the title "The King", by calling someone who is a virtual newcomer, when compared to the accomplishments of those like Kinser, Opperman, Swindell, Wolfgang, Ferkel, Weld and the other great drivers that made this sport what it is today.
|
After reading your second graph, all I can say, you're pretty sharp there Hawker. Do you really think that's going to happen?
Gosh Hawker, even though I'm a girl, I know all those racers you mentioned in your last graph were all virtual newcomers at one time, just like Donny Schatz
And we all know, not even the racers you mentioned were born with those accomplishments, they had to work for them all. No amount of money can buy accomplishments they are earned with talent for racing, gee I even know that.
