Midwest Open Wheel Association winged sprint cars will conclude their 2013 season with two big events at Lincoln Speedway Friday October 11th and at Jacksonville Speedway on Saturday October 12th. The weekend events presented by National Speed Sport News pay tribute to the tradition of the former Springfield Speedway and it’s promoter, Joe Shaheen who concluded his racing season with a ‘Super Weekend’ that would draw cars and fans from across the Midwest.
On Friday the 11th at Lincoln Speedway, MOWA winged sprints will be joined by the Big 10 Super Late Model Series for their season championship event. Also on Friday’s card are UMP Modifieds and Midget Lites. Grandstands in Lincoln open at 5:00 with racing beginning at 7:00.
Lincoln native AJ Bruns, who currently sits second in MOWA season points looks forward to the sprint cars returning to his home track. “I look forward to every chance I get to race on my home track at Lincoln in front of our friends, family and sponsors. Sprint cars put on a heck of a show at Lincoln Speedway and it’s a fun track to race on. We’ve had a pretty good year with the MOWA series racing throughout the Midwest, and I’d love to finish it off on the last weekend with a win at home in Lincoln.
On Saturday the events move to Jacksonville Speedway for an all-day gathering featuring nostalgia, racing and fun leading up to Saturday Night’s Shaheen’s Blast From the Past $4,000 to win MOWA Season Championship. Current points leader Jerrod Hull hopes to celebrate his third straight MOWA Championship Saturday Night. Many of the best drivers from across the Midwest should be on hand for this annual event that was won last season by Springfield’s Joey Moughan over Altoona, Iowa’s Terry McCarl.
Moughan, who plans to drive the Jacksonville based Northrop Racing #83 this year, hopes to repeat. “Winning the Shaheen’s race last season was one of the biggest wins of my career. A few years ago I led up until the final turn so it was extra special to finally park in the winner’s circle for the most prestigious sprint car race in Illinois. This year it would be extra special if we could get a win for the Northrop team given their long history of racing at Jacksonville Speedway.”
Saturday’s festivities begin with a vintage racing car show and memorabilia display from 11 to 4. The afternoon is highlighted by a 4 Cylinder Mafia 100 enduro race for hornet cars starting at 2:30. Racing for the nights events which will include Neal Tire 305 sprint cars, UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks and Micros in addition to the MOWA sprints begins at 7:00.
Admission each night is $20 for adults with children 12 and under free. For more information regarding either event, email [email protected] or call 217-371-3653. Mufflers are required at both events. For more information on MOWA rules and procedures, visit www.MidwestOpenWheel.com.

Teams and Fans traveling here this weekend... Our friends at the Jacksonville Hampton Inn only have 6 rooms left Friday Night and are offering a last minute racer rate of $79 - compared to the normal rate of $139. Just call 217-291-0415 and ask for the 'racer's rate' while they last. The Hampton Inn is the closest hotel to the Speedway right on Morton Avenue with an Applebee's next door. Remember, the races are in Lincoln Friday night and at Jacksonville SATURDAY. Come to Jacksonville to spend the night after the races at Lincoln and you'll already be here for the great day we have planned for Saturday.
