Brian Brown – Runner-up at Hockett/McMillin Memorial Sets Up Grove Open!

(Bill W) September 30, 2013 – It was a special weekend for the Brian Brown Racing Casey’s General Stores/FVP #77 (for a weekend) team at the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri.  Honored to fly the Jesse Hockett Racing colors, the Grain Valley, Missouri driver put together a strong pair of second place finishes.  This weekend, he heads with the World of Outlaws to the Williams Grove Speedway near Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania for the Morgan Hughes National Open.

On Friday night at Wheatland, you were able to get yourself in the redraw.

It’s always important at the ASCS shows to put yourself in position the first night to do well all weekend long.  We had a pretty good draw, and had a good start going from fourth to second.

You drew a three for the feature, and you chased Tony Bruce Jr. the rest of the way.

We were able to get in second early.  I got to Tony a few times.  The track was still pretty narrow in the feature.  Second is definitely not what we wanted, especially with Jack and Connie (Hockett) letting us run Jesse’s number.  The key Friday night was getting locked in and we were able to do that.

They did what they could to get the show in on Saturday, but ultimately it was rained out.  It sounded like the racing was good on Sunday despite the early start.

Lucas Oil Speedway and Dan Robinson did a phenomenal job not pulling the plug.  They did a good job with a day track on Sunday.  I thought the track was great all day long.  To have that good of track conditions with that many cars is unheard of really.

Being locked in, you drew a four for the feature.

They reworked the track again before the feature.  I knew starting fourth we needed to make a bold move early, and we did our best to get the lead.  As it was, we got to second.

It sounded like you gave it all you had.

We got in behind Johnny (Herrera) and got rolling.  We got into traffic and got around a couple of lapped cars.  We were able to chase him down.  Coming to the white, there were a couple of lapped cars ahead of him.  I had a really good run, and I thought we had a shot to win it.  The yellow came out, and he was able to hold on and we finished second.

What did he do on the green, white, checker finish?

He did a good job on the restart of slowing things down and dictating where his car was best, and maybe where mine wasn’t.  We just didn’t get a good enough run and ended up second.

I know you wanted to win for the Hockett’s.

I’m just so grateful to the Hockett family for getting the opportunity.  We did our best.  We gave it our all.  It was really cool to honor two great people that we raced a lot with.

This weekend, you will be racing one of the biggest events in the sport, the Williams Grove Open.

I haven’t been there since 2004.  We qualified second quick and didn’t fare as well in the feature.  We know we’ll do the best we can, but we can easily come back with our tail between our legs honestly. That place can chew them up and spit them out.  One thing we do have going for us is the best engine builder in the country with Charlie Garrett and the best chassis company with Maxim.  Along with all our great partners, it gives us an advantage.

The Pennsylvania Posse isn’t always kind to visitors whether it’s the Outlaws or anyone else.

There will be forty or fifty cars out there, and most of them are capable of winning.  We’ll just go in and do our best.  I’m looking forward to meeting a lot of the fans out there too.  They’re definitely passionate about their sprint car racing in central PA.
