This Saturday, September 28th, the Orange Show Quarter Midget Racing Association (OSQMRA) will host a celebration of the life and accomplishments of Kara Hendrick during the Annual Kara Hendrick Memorial Race and Quarter Midget Reunion.  Please join us and reunite with older generations of Quarter Midget racers and family.  The festivities will take place at the "little track" located within the Orange Show Fairgrounds in San Bernardino, California.

Kara, her twin brother Kenny Hendrick, and older brother Danny Hendrick are all alumni of the former Pomona Valley Quarter Midget Racing Association.  Each were usual threats to win, and oftentimes raced in multiple divsions.  Kara graduated from Quarter Midgets to racing various forms of motorsports, and quickly became the most successful female driver in USAC history in the early 1990's.  The bulk of her success was behind the wheel of a USAC TQ (Three-Quarter) Midget, in which she finished 2nd in the point standings in 1989.  Unfortunately, just hours after breaking the track record in a USAC Full Midget at Cajon Speedway in El Cajon, California, Kara lost her life behind the wheel during competition.  Brothers Kenny and Danny went on to race a variety of race cars themselves.  Kenny Hendrick raced in the Nascar Southwest Tour and eventually moved up into the Nascar Nationwide Series.  In 1989, Danny Hendrick was paralyzed from the neck down in an industrial accident, yet quickly overcame adversity and has raced Late Model Stock Cars via hand controls at the Orange Show Stadium.

The Quarter Midget races will begin at 12:00 Noon on Saturday and admission to the event is FREE!!!  There will be raffle prizes for the kids, and refreshments for sale.  Come check out the sport that launched the careers of Jeff Gordon, Jason Leffler, Jimmy Vasser, and tons of other extremely successful professional race car drivers.  Quarter Midgets are a fun, safe form of motor racing that is perfect for training young aspiring racers and provide an excellent opportunity to learn values, competitive spirit and drive, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Immediately following the Quarter Midget races, the Stars of the Late Models will be racing at the "big track", the Orange Show Stadium, right next door.  Front gates open at 4:00 PM, with racing starting at 6:00 PM.  Come watch Mike Kirby, Carla Laney, and the rest of the best duke it out and sling some clay in the racey 1/4-mile speedway.  Also on hand will be the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods, Street Stocks and Mini Stocks.  A great night of racing is in store.  Adult admission is just $15.  Military & Seniors are only $10.  Youth 6-12 are $5.  Kids Under 12 are FREE!  Parking is FREE!

We'll see you all there...can't wait!

Jeff...

I LOVE this shot!  This photograph really says a lot.  Kara always had that infectious smile and gentle nature about her...until she strapped into her race car!  Smile

Thank you for sharing!

I timed her track record lap at Cajon Speedway, that night. She was so proud that she called Bob East after Qualifying. She had a brand new Beast Chassis. Less than an hour later in the Dash, she climbed a wheel entering T3 and landed, cage first on the top of the concrete crashwall.

She passed, a little later at Sharp Memorial in San Diego.

She now rests in the new section of Rose Hills, Whittier right next to the 605 Freeway.

She was a great lady and was on her way up the ladder of racing success, cut so short.

Couldn't agree more Dick.  Kara will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew her.  I knew her mostly as a competitor of mine in racing. Damn she was driven to win!  I cherish memories of racing against Kara and her brothers...and then jumping campfires on our BMX bicycles after the races.  She showed me where to buy my 1st pair of Vans shoes when I was about 10 years old.  Silly, but fond memories!  Later, she was the bridesmaid in my sister's wedding.  Can't believe it has been over 2 decades now since we last hung out at Ascot after a day race in Pomona.
