A last lap pass of Logan Payne from the 1s of Scott Reneau, sees the Trinidad Texan close the gap to 50 points. Raven Culp seemed to have the points lead in hand, as he was leading the field with 10 to go. Culp however, had a rear end failure and the DNF sent Culp back 110 points behind Payne.

All 3 drivers still have a shot at the 1st ever DGS Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Car Championship. The Devil's Bowl Speedway "Points System" awards a 10 point position difference in heat racing action and a 20 point position difference in feature racing action.

Raven Culp can still make up the gap and win the championship if he finishes 6 spots ahead of Payne and 3 spots ahead of Reneau in the feature racing action. Granted he would have to stay even in heat racing action; as well as Culp could gain points and have a less demanding feat come feature time with a good heat finish compared to Reneau and Payne. Raven Culp initially gained the points lead in July and seemed to be unstoppable. But August was not his month, a engine 4 weeks ago and a rear end last Saturday has almost destroyed his Championship hopes. If there is a driver to bounce back and do the impossible it is Culp though, he has the most wins this year in heat racing action at 4; without a engine and rear end failure Culp would have the most wins of the year at 5 as well. Culp though only has 3 recorded, which is still tied with Logan Payne for most wins. All in all Culp has the best shot of anyone to make points up in his heat race, and without a mechanical issue in the feature he has the best shot at taking home the Championship from 110 points down than just about anyone behind the wheel.

Scott Reneau was your season long points leader, in fact on June 29th of this year he held a 290 point lead over Culp and Payne. Several top 5's and several wins by Payne and Culp later, he finds his self 50 points behind Payne going into the final weekend. Reneau had been as low as 100 points back 3 weeks ago, from there he won that weekends race; regaining the points lead then a sour finish in 7th that dropped him 70 points back. This last weekend though Reneau showed a WILL TO WIN like never before. Battling it out with Logan Payne over the last 5 laps and making the pass on the final corner coming to the checkered. Reneau has been the most consistent driver in 2013, posting 13 top 10s in 13 starts. Wins from the competition has been Reneau's Achilles Heel. 50 points is only 3 spots in a feature event, for Reneau to win the Championship he must beat Payne by 3 spots and not fall to Culp by 3 spots. If Reneau does win it would be the 3rd time to take the points lead.. With all these 3s involved is "3rd times the charm"?

Logan Payne, what else can you say? The man has been the most consistent driver this entire summer and possibly the entire year. Logan Payne was down 360 points to Reneau on June 29th and has finally took the points lead, and held it for 2 weeks now. The Payne name has a history at the Devil's Bowl Speedway, the son of the "Red Rooster", Logan is on his way to stapling the Payne name on another Championship Trophy. With the classic "Black and Gold Leaf" paint scheme, the number 2 machine has been a flash of sparking black on the race track. Blistering the competition to 3 wins this year, and has 10 top 5's in 13 starts. That means that 77% of the time you can find the 2 car in the top 5. Not only that but Payne has a average finish of 3.85! How does that translate to this weekend? Well, if you believe that "Numbers Never Lie" that would mean that Raven Culp has no chance at winning and Scott Reneau would have to win Saturday to win the Championship. Logan Payne is tied with Culp at 3 wins on the year, so it would not be a surprise to see the 2 in Parks Auto Sales Victory Lane, with a DGS Motorsports Race Saver Sprint Car winner sign to the left and a DGS Motorsports Race Saver Sprint Car Championship Trophy to the right.

The Wild Cards!

Martin Edwards: After over a month and 4 days to be exact, Martin Edwards will be behind the wheel of a sprint car. Infact he maybe the biggest threat to mix up the Championship battle. The last time Martin was on the Devil's Bowl Speedway he took home the win in DGS Motorsports RaceSaver Sprint Cars. A off track incident sent Martin Edwards to the pit area for the entire month of August, but this weekend will be his return. No doubt that this driver will be in the Top 5, which is where the Championship battle will be settled.

KSP Drivers: With Kennedale Speedway Park (the only other Saturday Night RaceSaver Sprint Car track) taking the weekend off, there should be a host of short track ace's at the half mile Saturday night. From Chad Wilson to Justin Fifield, the possibilities are endless on who could be at the Bowl come race time.

Johnny "Baja" Miller: The 4-time IMCA National Sprint Car Champion, finally graced Parks Auto Sales Victory Lane last Saturday night. The driver from Burleson, Texas has been up front all year long at the historical half mile and is a contender at just about any raceway in America. A driver not new to success, is definitely looking to cap off the regular season with back-to-back wins.

Micheal Lang: Micheal Lang only has 7 starts in the Palm Harbor Homes, DGS Motorsports number 14 car at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in 2013. He has 1 win though, and also holds the BEST average finish of ANY driver this year at 2.57. This driver has always been fast, posting 7 Top 5's in 7 starts. Micheal Lang has a 100% chance of finishing in the coveted Top 5 and possibly being the biggest wrench between the championship contenders.

Robert Vetter: The newly crowned RPM Speedway track champion, has nothing but momentum on his side. This driver has competed in 4 different states through the year and has had success in just about every outing. Currently residing in 5th in the Championship standings, Vetter is the highest points contender to not have a win at the Bowl in 2013. Could this be the week that the "Wolfe City Traveler" travels to Parks Auto Sales Victory Lane?

Dalton Stevens: 4 starts, 2 Top 5's, 1 win, that is the stat book for the "SuperStar of Scurry". Dalton Stevens is one of the top competitors in the DFW area. Running a limited schedule in 2013, it has not been short on success. The limited schedule slates the 99x at the Bowl Saturday night, only the results will tell where this driver will land.

Payton Pierce: The driver who has competed in more divisions of racing than any driver in the AREA, the USAC, IMCA and RaceSaver young gun Payton Pierce is definitely not one to sleep on. Hailing from Bridgeport, Texas the "Texas Gentleman" has been very successful in his first full season in the BIG SPRINT. Taking 2 wins at KSP and 1 at the Golden Triangle Raceway Park. All of the success has came at Short Tracks, but he has competed at the Bowl. In 2 starts however, there has been no Top 10 finishes with a average finish of 18th. Payton should still be considered as a outside threat, just for the simple fact that you have to know what is wrong to do whats right and he is just now coming to the end of his first full season behind a Sprint Car. We will have to see if he has developed a BIG TRACK skill in the BIG SPRINT come race time.
