Smoke didn't win a Nationwide race until he'd already won a Sprint Cup championship, so that argument against Larson doesn't mean much. Newman will take over the Target #42 and Larson will run a few shows in a third CGR car to maintain his eligibility for Rookie of the Year in 2015. Dillion will take over Harvick's seat and the car will be #3 - maybe next year, maybe in 2015, with a one year bridge next year for RCR, perhaps Kurt Busch. Larson will take over the #1 for McMurray after next season. Or, Jeff Gordon will retire after next season (or cut back to a limited schedule) and Larson will take over Gordon's seat at HMS. Far Fetched? Not really. Gordon knows Larson is a talent and given that he has an ownership stake in both the #24 and #48, if Jeff wants it to happen, he could make it happen. Money isn't an obstacle at HMS.

EGR only has 2 cup teams. as of yet i haven't heard of any plans to add any more, but you never know.
unless chip doesn't renew with JMac that leaves one cup seat open with the team. if JMac returns it most likely would be for more than a year or two. so if JMac comes back and larson doesn't get the seat in the 42, that leaves him waiting at least a couple of years, because i doubt EGR signs a one year deal to put someone else in the 42.
if JMac doesn't come back, and larson doesn't go into the 42, i don't see EGR signing drivers to drive their cars on a one year deal. i also don't see them going with two brand new drivers all at once. if that does happen and larson isn't one of them, that leaves larson waiting again. i believe chip has larson tied up for 5 more years, but contracts can be broken....if the money is right.
so even though larson may not have as much stock car time in as some people might like, and if JMac stays, it makes sense to put larson in the 42 with JMac there to help him. i wouldn't think ERG would want to put larson in a cup car as well as have a new driver in the other car that is not familiar with the team and has to go through their own learning process with the team. not saying that is the plan, just trying to make sense out of the possible scenarios.
i remember not long ago the discussion of JPM and EGR and larson came up and some of us on here were advising others that JPM would most likely be out at the end of the year. some others just couldn't fathom the idea that chip would let JPM go because they had a relationship in chips other racing ventures. well i have no idea what is going to happen to JPM but i wouldn't be surprized to see him running with chips sports car team, maybe with scott pruit.
i don't know any more than the rest of you, just trying to put together the most logical possibilities, in a sport and a series that dosn't lend itself to much logic at all.

Not gonna happen. Austin Dillon is not eligible for ROY in Cup. He already has 9 starts (before his stint in the 14).....a ROY candidate cannot have more than 7.

i was wondering about that as the last i knew it was 5 races i think. i dind't know if they changed it to 5 races in a season or added a couple of races to the limit.

The first post on here that has made sense. People forget that Johnson and Smoke didn't exactly burn up the Busch series before moving to Cup.

neither did jeff gordon.

The rule was changed and Austin will be eligible to run for ROY in 2014 since he declared NW for points and not Cup.

I don't know why everyone thinks EGR will hire another driver. Before this season started they gave us the Larson timeline. K&N East for one season, a few ARCA & Truck races, Nationwide for one season, then Cup!

I would like to see him run 12-15 more years full time in sprint cars before he moves to cup. Get him maybe 140-150 races per year to see if he is really ready.

I think Jamie Mac and Juan Montoya knew Larson was coming up next year and were in a race with each other to finish higher in points. The 1 is 10 points out of 10th in points and the 42 is back in the mid 20's. Montoya lost the points battle and lost his ride.
