Last August I drove from my home in North Carolina to the sprint car races at Kokomo Speedway. It was more than my tenth visit to Kokomo over the years. Thank goodness our Honda Fit is great on mileage. Went in the pits. To drive that distance and not go in the pits is, well, just not me. Especially once a year. And the feeling you get strolling thru the pits is a history lesson in non wing racing. Hey. That looks like so and so. And it is. And then it starts. I remember standing by the fence between turns one and two. I'm smiling and getting pelted by the dirt. At age seventy shouldn't I be doing something else? The answer is no. To tell you the truth, it was one of my favorite races of the year. So when I hear blah, blah, blah from some freebie chirping about Kokomo, it's another pet peeve. Here's my opinion as a paying customer. If you don't go to Kokomo any chance you have the opportunity, you're making a mistake. Especially when you may have gotten some bad advice.

Kokomo is and always has been absolutely awesome. One of the raciest tracks ever in the history of race tracks... bar none.

Kokomo has the best weekly racing there is. 3 and 4 wide are the norm rather than the exception.
The Kokomo Smackdown on August 22-24th is one of my most anticipated weekends. Last years inaugural edition had two of the nights in my top 5 races of the year, and the other night finished up about 6-7th in my top 10.

I thought that bad advice would be someone telling you to buy a Honda Fit... :/
Opinions may vary...

Kokomo reminds me a lot of the "gone but not forgotten" Little Springfield Speedway. I only attended one race a few years ago at Kokomo and all the races at Little Springfield back in the mid sixty's. Kokomo was like a return to the past, only the drivers names had changed. In some cases, just first names as there are now 2nd and 3rd generations from the 60's

In the early 90's I drove from Des Moines, IA to Kokomo for an All-Star show the Sunday after the Nationals because the man in the room next to me named Deuce Turrill said it would be the best show I saw all week. Kevin Huntley won a barn burner and I made sure I went into the pits after to tell my new friend Deuce he was right about Kokomo.....

So called pastor must be upset they would not give him a free pitpass. Not sure how many races he attends at the tracks he knocked (kokomo,Gas city) but the simple thing to do would be get a schedule or check the tracks web page and you would know they are off a few nights during the season. Some one just wanting a free handout.

If it was the early 90s, you probably saw the "old" Kokomo that was flat as a pancake with inverted banking. I'm sure there were some good races with the old configuration, but the "new" Kokomo is a lot different (and in my mind, a lot better!).

YOU'RE COLD?"

I've seen both Chilly, saw a couple of good winged races there and lots of midget and non-wingers in the old days also. I used to live pretty close to there a couple of different times, lol....

I just realized a bit earlier today what this thread was all about. The freebie Pastor's column.
I doubt he gets to any of the tracks he mentioned in his column (I dont normally read his column hence why I didnt realize what the thread was really about) but maybe once a year from the sounds of it.
All the Indiana tracks have good non wing sprint car action, and some I like more than others. I moved to Indiana from Maine years ago,and I could have just as easily moved to Pennsylvania,Ohio,or any other place that has sprint cars, but after my first trip here in 1996,I decided this is where I HAVE to live, and its where I moved to because of the racing.
Kokomo is the place I look forward to the most every weekend. Much like Little Belleville is at the top of my list for midget racing,Kokomo is at the top of my list for sprint car racing.
