AFTER 5-WEEK BREAK LIGHTNING SPRINTS BACK IN ACTION SATURDAY AT ORANGE SHOW!

(Placentia, CA, June 24, 2013) After a five-week break in the middle of the season, the California Lightning Sprint Car Series returns to action this Saturday night, June 29th, at the Macro Air Orange Show Stadium on the Orange Show Fairgrounds in San Bernardino.
Joining the CLS on the show will be the URA Sprint Cars and the URA Limited Midgets. Spectator gates will open at 4:30 PM and the first race is slated to take the green flag at 5:30.

Saturday's race signal's the resumption of the tight battle for the 2013 CLS championship. Third year racer Stephen Limon of Corona led the title chase from the start of the season until the May 11th race at Bakersfield when Placentia veteran Dan Hillberg shot ahead and took a 12-point lead. Limon, a United States Army veteran, chopped that lead down to 3-points at the last race on Memorial Day weekend at Perris Auto Speedway.

Through the first eight races of the campaign, consistency has powered Hillberg and Limon to their lofty positions in the standings. Hillberg has six top five finishes. They include a win at Perris, two seconds, a third and two fourth place outings. Limon has seven top five finishes with a win at Ventura, two seconds, a third, two fourths and a fifth.

Like the battle for the top spot in the standings, there is war waging from third to sixth. The "World Famous" Tom Downing of Lakewood is third in the standings. While he is 207-points behind leader Hillberg, he is just 2-points ahead of Guy Maresch of Anaheim Hills. Lomita's Bobby Michnowicz, who has missed a couple of races, sits fifth and is only 12-points behind Maresch and recent high school graduate Alex Bissett of Hemet is 18-markers behind Michnowicz.

Bobby Michnowicz is the only driver in the series with more than one win in 2013. The veteran racer has three victories thus far including the first race at the Orange Show on
April 27th. His other two victories both came at the Bakersfield Speedway. Other winners in 2013 are Michnowicz' teenage son Kevin (Perris Auto Speedway), Hillberg (Perris Auto Speedway), Limon (Ventura) and Northern California's Doug Nunes (Bakersfield Speedway).

After Saturday's race, the CLS will have little time to prepare for their next action, which will come in front of their biggest crowd of the year in an open wheel quadruple header at Perris Auto Speedway on Thursday, July 4th.

For 2013, cars in the CLS will be carrying transponders and they will qualify at all events. The
driver with the most fast qualifying times at the end of the season will win the "Cold Fire West Qualifying Championship" and will pocket an extra $500.00. Another new sponsor to the
series this season is Extreme Muffler. They will sponsor the "Extreme Muffler Heat Race Championship" and the driver with the most heat race wins will collect a $500.00 check.

The California Lightning Sprint Car Series would like to thank series sponsors Christian Stover Foundation, Rod End Supply, Cold Fire West, Sander Engineering, Saldana Race Products, DK Machining and Fabrication, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, Hoosier Racing Tires, Circle Track Performance, Extreme Muffler, Performance by Rosson Racing, Electro Tech Powder Coating, Oil Twins Amsoil and Haul Ass Fuel. If you or your company would like to become part of the California Lightning Series for the 2013 season, please call Dan Hillberg at: (714) 719-0295.

Gotta put my two cents in on this one: The Days of going to your local Saturday night dirt track and watching 50 sprint cars run without a support division are over. Your very lucky if you don't have 3 or 4 support classes, and a starting time so early that the track is junk before the heat races are over. The negativity towards any support class is just hurting open wheel dirt track racing in general. Promoters are working hard to provide a quality show and they add support classes that are entertaining and can provide a feeder series to the sprint cars. Ask the current USAC CRA champion and also ask the last sprint car feature winner at OSS, both graduates of the CLS, what they think of the support series. I'm sure they will have nothing but good things to say. Maybe think about the big picture and what it takes to run a Saturday night local sprint car show in California in today's tough times. Lend your support to all the divisions racing on a Saturday night, whether it's a CLS car, dwarf car, modified or any other support division because those teams work just as hard as the sprint car teams and they put their heart into racing too. thx

I also do not get the negativity towards other types of racing & as Bobby points out for the foreseeable future that is the way the ball is gonna bounce

So lets come up with ways to make this a advantage ?

If U run A Sprint, Modified , Street Stock Show , one thing U can do is alternate Sprint & Mod heats , run 1Sprint Heat then 1st Mod heat then repeat , cause the 8" mod tires will dig up the track counteracting the Sprints tending to seal the track , if U get it dialed in should keep the track in good shape, cutting down on the tractor show events

Also Promoters need to tighten up the show to get done in a 2 1/2 -3 hr window so the Sprint Car Feature is the last race run , this will take some adjustment in thinking , but it can be done

The above Comments are satire & for entertainment
purposes only

If it wasn't for whining this clown would have nothing to say. Quitcha bitchin, and try to say something positive. Support classes help to keep tracks solvent. Some folks refuse to appreciate the racing these guys do. As the Famous Walt Hauser said "racin's racin".

I caught the humor that was intended in Ziggy's comment. It was just a ribbin' to his buddies...I"m sure he didn't mean any negativity towards the California Lightning Sprints.

However, I agree with Bobby and the others 100% in that the Lightning Sprints, although a "support" division, are super fast race cars...with the same talent behind the wheel...and the same technology in the chassis. These things are not easy to drive, despite having the advantage of the wings. Look at how many of these guys have moved up the "ladder" to be successful in Sprint Cars...Darren Hagen, Mike Spencer, Danny Faria, David Cardey, Greg Bragg, Tony Everhart, Donny Gansen, Johnny Bates, and several others.

Don't forget...the fastest timed lap at the Opening Night Race at Orange Show Stadium in ANY division (CLS, Limited Midgets & Unlimited Sprints) was turned by Jeffrey Dyer...in a Lightning Sprint!

See you all this Saturday!

P.S. Please bring your friends! Smile

For those of you not familiar with the Lightning Sprints, they are the same exact size as a midget and run all the same components except motor and drive train. The CLS cars run stock production motorcycle engines 1000cc or 1200 cc. They are allowed aftermarket fuel methanol conversion system, and aftermarket oil pan and a few other minor modifications. This is what keeps the series so affordable to run. These cars are extremely fast, extremely racey, and the best part extremely affordable. You can run these cars for a fraction of sprints and midgets. Here is a link for the last CLS race at PAS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1FkzG3B8dw Here is a link to the CLS website. www.calightningsprints.com I invite anybody that is interested in knowing more about these cars to come down after the races at OSS and/or PAS and I will show you all aspects of these cars. Look for the black 21k and the white 12 car. These cars are the best kept secret in dirt track racing. If you can win in one of these cars you can win anywhere. Bobby
