News July 11, 2007 at 9:44:28 Submitted by David Smith Jr. Conversation with the Mayor Below
are some questions that I brought to Mayor Mick Cornett concerning the
future of SFS. This topic was brought up by somebody mentioning the
track was going to be shut down, the same thing that has been said
since our buddy Skippy Wagner was in charge of the fairgrounds. This
topic really got me into trouble as I was accused of starting this
rumour, one in which I am trying to stop for the benefit of all of us
race people. After my posting of the Mayors conversation, I have more
to post on what I have been strongly told.
I told the Mayor that every year, this rumour is brought up
and gets everybody all fired up. So I asked the Mayor, what truly is
the future of SFS? His first response was, "I don't know for sure." He
informed that they do a disservice to the racing community and the
potential income and he truly wants to change that. He wants to see a
multi-purpose facility, both dirt and pavement, which he hopes would
increase the popularity of motorsports here in OKC. He doesn't care if
that is on the fairgrounds or somewhere else inside the city limits. He
would like to see more big races that bring in more out of town folks
to help generate more revenue to the city, which I can understand. Hey,
he is a Mayor and a businessman and wants to generate money for the
city.
I then asked if he ever drove by the fairgrounds on a Friday
night or remember what the grandstands looked like back when he was
sportscaster. He is aware of what we do have and that is another reason
as to why he wants to see motorsports survive in OKC. I also asked
about the proposed MAPS3 which was mentioned to have included a racing
facility. He told that there was nothing definite about a MAPS3 but if
there was, motorsports would be included in that.
I was satisfied with my answers
and respected the man for having a daily agenda to
follow so I ended our conversation. I was told more on the track
Tuesday with receiving a phone call. As some of you may know, Lanny
Edwards signed a four-year lease with the fairgrounds which puts him
promoter for the next four years (until 2011). I guess several of you
went up to Lanny this past Friday night and told him they read where
this was the last year of SFS. Well, Lanny himself did some calling and
this is what he found out. The plans for the new entrance that some
people saw hanging on one of the buildings at the fairgrounds is said
not to be there and that was proposed by former State Fair Park head
Skip Wagner, a man who hated racing. The plans for the new entrance has
changed and while nothing is definite as to where it would be held, the
grandstands is staying put and would not suffer because of a new
entrance. The new entrance would be either off of I-44 and May Ave.,
off of Reno where that entrance is or, if it was to be off of May Ave.
then it would be where the railroad tracks are. But some don't see the
entrance coming anytime in the near future.
The fairboard has NO PLANS of doing away with the racing facility at
SFS as all are satisfied with what goes on at the track on Friday
nights. It is my opinion, with talking too the Mayor and learning more
from Tuesday that yes, racing at SFS is safe as there is a signed
contract through 2011. I honestly believe that racing at SFS is safe
through then and even years after 2011. But if you care about racing at
the fairgrounds and like what we do have, I would stop with speculation
and the rumours as they do nobody any good and just get people upset.
Now, when somebody mentions anything about the track closing, just tell
them it is a dead issue.

Yeap, Matt you are correct.

in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he
stands at times of challenge and controversy."
