$3K to win this Saturday as Civil War Series returns to Kings Speedway in Hanford
HANFORD, CA (6-9-13) -After a long hiatus, the winged warriors of the Civil War Sprint Car Series will return to the lightning fast 3/8 mile Kings Speedway in Hanford this Saturday night. The event marks the second of three tribute races on the 2013 Civil War trail as the premier traveling series for winged 360 sprint cars in California takes to the spotlight in the annual Pombo-Sargent Classic at Hanford.
The Pombo-Sargent Classic has been going on for over 20 years and honors California racing icons Al Pombo and Marshall Sargent. The event has taken place at both Kings Speedway and the Tulare Thunderbowl through the years.
Pombo began his career in the 1940's and is credited with more than 500 main event victories, including multiple wins in the Gold Cup at Capital Speedway, the same event which is now held at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. He also won five San Jose Speedway titles, seven NASCAR super-modified championships, nine titles at Kearney Bowl and six at Clovis Speedway.
Early in Sargent's career he won a pair of San Jose titles, which included two wins in the Johnny Key Memorial, and also won the Australian championship in 1964. A pair of crashes unfortunately cut his career short and he enjoyed retirement until his passing in 1990. His legend and memory is kept alive each year as part the Pombo/Sargent Classic and on Saturday night will fall nothing short once again as King's Speedway pays homage to the pair of legends who helped set the foundation for the sport with an inflated purse that offers $3000 to the feature event winner courtesy of a $1000 bonus from Shaw's Structures Unlimited.
Shaw's Structures Unlimited is a very reputable, small family business owned by Paul W. Shaw Jr. and Gloria Shaw of Fresno, CA. Paul Jr. is a second generation metal and steel building specialist. Paul Jr. has over 30 years of experience in the construction industry working with Shaw Steel Structures, Inc. (known as Style-Line Structures in the early 1970's). Shaw Structures was founded in 1999, and then was incorporated in 2004, adopting the name Shaw's Structures Unlimited, Inc.
Shaw Structures Unlimited, Inc. specializes in pre-engineered metal buildings and employs experienced in-house steel erectors and estimators. SSU, Inc. manages permits, freight on board, as well as turn-key projects throughout the state of California. The family owned company strongly supports the sport of auto racing, fielding the #88 sprint car of Koen Shaw last year, the 2012 Civil War Series Rookie of the Year and this season bringing Kyler Shaw to the full size sprint cars who is contending for rookie honors this year also at Placerville Speedway in the #92 sprint car.
The Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series is a unique championship campaign managed by Handy Racing Promotions in conjunction with those tracks participating in the series. Each of the tracks that host this competitive tour during the season agree that their 360 sprint car division will "go dark" on the dates in which the series participates at one of the tracks on the tour.
This program format has proven successful over the last two decades and allows a driver to compete for the prestige of a championship title in a traveling campaign without forfeiting the same opportunities at his or her weekly track.
As the winged warriors face the teams of the south this coming Saturday night, the championship campaign is truly heating up as the series edges past the halfway mark in the year. Topping the point standings is Justin Sanders of Prunedale. In five starts Sanders has earned three top five finishes and is 25 points ahead of two time champion Sean Becker of Roseville. Defending seven time champion Andy Forsberg is third, 27 points out of the lead while Billy Aton of Benicia is fourth, 41 points out.
Colby Wiesz of Colfax rounds out the top five, tied with Princeton's Mason Moore. Herman Klein of Sacramento, Fremont's Shane Golobic, Sacramento's Billy Butler and Bradley Terrell of Sebastopol complete the top ten.
