Lucas Oil ASCS Speedweek: the Tracks, the Winners, the Champions

19th Lucas Oil ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek begins Friday, June 14 at
the Kennedale Speedway Park. A staple of the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by
MAVTV American Real schedule from 1993-2009, the event ceased for two
years before reemerging in 2012.
For its 19th year, the Lucas Oil ASCS Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek will
carry a fitting tribute. With the loss of longtime friend, and ASCS
engine builder Bob Westphal earlier this week, the 2013 Lucas Oil ASCS
Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek Champion will receive the Bob Westphal
Memorial Trophy.
The trophy will be presented by Bob’s son, Kelly Westphal at the 2013
National Awards Banquet at the Cocopah Casino and Resort in Yuma, Ariz.
A quick breakdown of the history of Speedweek finds a tradition that
has seen 115 nights of competition across Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana,
Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
Only 36 drivers have emerged victories during Speedweek with only
seven earning the title of Speedweek Champion. Terry Gray topped the
first Speedweek in 1993 and totaled four Speedweek championships (1993,
1995, 1996, and 1998) but the king of Speedweek is none other than Gary
Wright.
“The Texas” cruised to six Speedweek titles (1994, 1997, 1999, 2000,
2002, and 2007) and amassed 30 victories at 16 facilities across six of
the eight states visited during Speedweek competition. A single trip to
Mississippi went to Tim Crawley while a pair of nights in Kansas
belonged to Terry Gray and Kevin Ramey who earned the Speedweek crown in
2001. Tim Crawley finished atop the Speedweek standings in 2004 and
again in 2009.
The 2003 Speedweek went to Shane Stewart with brother Darren doing so
in 2005. Jason Johnson has earned a pair of Speedweek titles in 2006
and 2008. When Speedweek was revived in 2012, Wayne Johnson emerged
victorious.
Of the States visited, Arkansas has hosted 36 nights at seven
facilities. Kansas a pair of nights at a pair of tracks and Louisiana a
trio of nights with as many winners at two ovals. Missouri has six dates
to its credit with just as many winners at four “Show Me” circles.
Mississippi hosted a single night in 2004 at the Delta Bowl Speedway
while Oklahoma stands at 37 dates between eight ovals of Sooner clay.
The birth place of Rock ‘n’ Roll gave Tennessee six nights over the
years with Texas at 24 across six tracks.
The 2013 edition of the Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek will include two
new facilities, beginning at the Kennedale Speedway Park on Friday, June
14 and the Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La, on Sunday, June 16.
The Devil’s Bowl Speedway will play host with the 40th annual Parks
Auto Sales Summer Nationals on Saturday, June 15, marking the fifteenth
Speedweek appearance at the half-mile in Mesquite.
Lawton Speedway, with special guest Tony Stewart on Wednesday, June
19 will be Speedweek visit eight with the Creek County Speedway
returning the Speedweek schedule for the first time since 2009 on
Thursday, June 20. The site of the first Speedweek date ever hosted,
this will be the thirteenth time it has graced the Speedweek schedule
The Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. will feature the Speedweek
finale for the second year running. Impact Signs, Awnings, and Wraps
presented the finale on Saturday, June 22 at the “Diamond of Dirt
Tracks”.
