2-IN-A-ROW FOR RYAN BERNAL AT PLACERVILLE
by Lance Jennings

PLACERVILLE, CA – MAY 5, 2013... Taking the lead from Max Adams on lap five, Ryan Bernal of Hollister sailed to his second straight USAC Western Classic Racing Series (WCRS) victory. The $2,000 win at Placerville Speedway marked his fourth career series triumph as he was followed by James Sweeney, Adams, fast qualifier D.J. Johnson, and Jimmy Trulli.

Racing Keith Ford’s #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, Ryan Bernal qualified fifth overall and ran second in his heat race. To date, the two-time Santa Maria track champion has one Kaeding Performance / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award and 53 feature laps led on the season. Bernal holds a twenty-six point advantage heading to Watsonville’s clash with USAC/CRA on June 14th.

Placerville’s James Sweeney claimed second in the 30-lap main event after starting sixth. Driving the #11 Lewis Racing entry, Sweeney was second fast in time trials and fourth in his heat race. Making his first WCRS start of the year, the veteran driver sits ninth in the point standings.

Starting on the pole position, Max Adams of Loomis led the first four laps of the main event before falling to Bernal. Piloting the Scott Adams owned #5X A.R.T. Enterprises / MotoWear International ART entry, Adams shad to settle for third at the checkered flags. Earlier in the program, Max qualified tenth and placed second in his heat race.

Stockton’s D.J. Johnson raced to fourth after starting ninth in the feature. Racing the family owned #33 Unique Breeds / Proplant Farm Services Eagle, Johnson earned his first Saldana Racing Products / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award and broke Jason York’s track record. Running seventh in his heat race, D.J. left Placerville second in championship points.

Jimmy Trulli of Placerville came home fifth in his first USAC Western Classic start of the campaign. Driving his #33T Trulli Racing entry, the veteran driver was third fast in time trials and placed third in his heat race.

Shingle Springs’ Justin Johnson earned the night’s Kaeding Performance / Racing Optics “Hard Charger” award with a ninth place run after starting fifteenth. Piloting his #25 sprinter, Johnson rebounded from early problems, not taking a time in qualifications and scoring eighth in his heat race.

Shauna Hogg of Fair Oaks won the night’s 8- lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Piloting the family owned #5 Borello Racing Engines / Jerry Crowell Racing Shocks Eagle, Hogg qualified fourteenth and scored twelfth in the main event. The veteran driver has climbed to seventh in points heading to Ocean Speedway.

Shingle Springs’ Marc Mackay won the program’s 8-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. Racing the family owned #86 sprinter, Mackay was seventh fast in time trials and claimed sixth in the Placerville main event.

The USAC Western Classic Racing Series will return to action on Saturday, June 14th, at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway. Located on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, the event will be the first of four co-sanctioned raced with the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. 4-Bangers, Modifieds, and Sport Mods will also join the card. Advance tickets are on sale and for more information, visit the track's website at www.oceanspeedway.com or call (831) 662-9466 (WINN).

Uhhhhhh, well... I guess I'm stumped as to how Placerville can pay $2K to the winner of a 15-car show when Perris can't match it for the winner of a 30-car show. (Lesseee here; how does this back gate deal work?) (If I had a wobble-eyed eyed emoticon, I'd have used it.)

Thanks. I'm =always= willing to have the facts corrected. Last I'd heard, the usual CRA winner's share at Perris was $1500. Do you know how long it's been at $2500? I know some specific events pay =more=, as well.

Raj,

As far as I know, the USAC/CRA purse has never been $1,500 for a regular show. A few years ago, there were was a reduced purse but the winner's share has been back to $2,500 for awhile now.

Then I stand corrected on that part of my post. Thanks for bringing me up to speed. I've been in CenCal for four years now and rarely get to Perris in person. Should have put it as a question before making the assertion.
