You mean the one weekend off the entire season (the weekend after Nationals)?? They race every weekend except August 17th. School is scheduled to start August 19th (there goes 1/2 the concession stand workers) and September is just as iffy of weather as April is around here.

That weekend off is welcomed by most of the local fans (after 10 days of sprintweek, our wallets need a rest), not to mention the KRCO volunteers, vendors, and the hourly workers at the track (concessions, security, track prep crew) need a rest.

Rain outs/Snow outs are nothing new in Late April / Early May - I remember many years when I was growing up where the first 3-4 weekends were rain-outs (and it snowed out the WoO races in April many times...)

The fact that they run the "taxi cab" nationals the last weekend in Sept makes me think kids being in school and Sept weather are not really a factor. Unless the taxi's draw such a small crowd only 1/2 as many consession stand workers are needed.

A majority (98%) of those fans are from outside the state (and 99.9% of those are all adults 45+ in age).

Outside of the beer stand, those "fans" don't buy much else and yes, only about 1/2 of the concession stand workers are in attendance for those races compared to weekly shows (from what I've seen with my own eyes anyway).

Not sure about 2013, but the 2012 races fell on Homecoming weekend, no high school students worked the concession stand at all that I can remember the entire weekend.

If they ran a WoO show or something like that in late September, there might be a crowd show up that would help the track pay the bills, but I know from many years of attending, that once school starts, the local crowd drops 50% (most of the ones that come during the summer go to High School and College FB games, move their kids to college, etc. and no longer have the free time to attend (plus the weather gets colder and the crowds resemble April crowds (tiny)).

The Late Models have a pretty busy schedule with a lot of specials that have been there long before the Knoxville show was ever a consideration. This weekend just works good for them

the reason they take off a week after the nationals is because it takes the fair board two weeks to count all the money

If 99.9% of taxi fans are over 45 they have a bleak future. Guess not many local LM fans follow their favorite drivers when they race at Knoxville? That seems odd. Most of the fans at 34 raceway in April must have been sprint car fans following their favorite drivers or favorite sport as most of the crowd left after the sprint car A main and didn't stick around for the bomber stocks A, which was all local guys who race there regular. I believe the Sept. date was a WoO show (&USA) at one time.

Maybe they were wore out from watching 400 pit bikes and 4 wheelers ! I know i was, that and we had a 2 hour drive to get home.

Thats why I sign in to the pits. So I can watch the sprint guys work on their cars or visit with them if they are not busy while all that stuff was running.

Any reason why they couldn't make up some dates on Fridays in June and July? With enough notice, how many would make the trip for two nights of racing on the same weekend? I certainly would.

I've been going to Knoxville for the weekly races since 1979. When it rained out they have never rescheduled before. Besides, the fair board claims they lose money on weekly shows. But to answer your question, yes I would definitely make the trip for a two night race. That would be awesome if they would do something like that.

I'm assuming the crowds just aren't there on a weekly basis to justify trying to make the shows up.

Are there any other weekly tracks out there that make up rainouts that aren't some sort of special event? Doesn't strike me as a normal practice.

I wish they payed more than 50 bucks for tow, a few years back, we made the 14hr drive, booked a room in Kville, entered the pits with three crewmembers at $25 a head ,purchased meals, parts, ect and absolutely destroyed a car earlie in the heat race, sadly that is the facts of racing, we just stepped back looked at all avenues givin, and have decided we are only going to Kville if we have a chance to race a couple nights, mainly to recover financhally from a devastating night from that far away drive wise..(if that should happen, hopefully not)

pretty funney response as to the week off to count the loot, Bonnie and Clyde, type of deal, but, still the best place to attend and spectate a weekly sprint race in IMO..

One of the reasons I've been told, is that the fair board doesn't want to go up against the high school and collage football games - especially the Iowa and Iowa State games on Saturdays.

Fireman hit the nail on the head IMHO. I know that at Eagle Raceway, the owner has found out that you do NOT go up against NU or high school football. It kills the crowd, and that's all there is to it.

I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks
anywhere.

I'm sure that is very true but I'm on the other side of that fence.

I'd absolutely love to make my trip twice as good by going to the Iowa/IA St football game and then taking in a sprint car race at Knoxville later the same day.

Yet the fair board has no problem risking a taxi cab race with a $300,000 purse against high school and collage football. Or an AMA bike race.
