Kerry Madsen – Cali Trip Closes!
(Bill W) April 16, 2013 – Kerry Madsen and the Keneric Racing #29 team wound up their California trip with the World of Outlaws last weekend. A pair of top fifteen finishes at King's Speedway in Hanford and the Perris Auto Speedway last weekend set up a trip back east. Tonight, the WoO hits El Paso Speedway Park in Texas.
Qualifying has been the biggest bugaboo on the trip for the team. When it comes to racing, the St. Mary's, New South Wales driver has been electric. Friday, at Hanford, a time trial registering 20th quick was a familiar refrain. "We've been making changes to try and change the qualifying," says Kerry. "It appears we've gone a little too far with them. We didn't qualify well at Hanford, but it is what it is."
After coming from row four to grab a transfer through his heat race, Kerry lined up inside row ten for the main event. "We actually had a really good race going," he says. "We were up to 14th or so. Jonathan Allard had a wreck and the red came out. For whatever reason, the computers went down in the scoring. They put us to the rear on the restart. It kind of spoiled a good run."
The scoring snafu could not be changed, but was frustrating nonetheless. Still, Kerry managed to come from the tail to 11th at the checkers. "We were still able to get back up to 11th," he says. "So that was good. It was kind of a fun, wild race. Without that scoring error, we may have gotten a little farther. The World of Outlaws officials explained to me the next day that they had a scoring issue. It's part of it. No big deal and we moved on to Perris."
At Perris on Saturday, Kerry timed in 17th quick. "We were good in hot laps," he says. "We were just a little bit too tight in qualifying."
After running fifth in his heat, Kerry lined up 17th for a feature that saw little passing. "The track was just so heavy and one-lane in the feature," he says. "You just couldn't make any moves. I followed Jason Sides for 30 laps. I was on his bumper, but there was no chance to overtake him. We finished 15th, which was unfortunate."
Kerry and the team are regaining their confidence every time out and the first win seems imminent. "We're out of California now," he says. "I think we're going to start qualifying, and once we start doing that, we'll be in position for wins. We just have to keep the faith."
Tonight at El Paso starts a busy week. The WoO will move on to Paducah (KY) International Raceway on Friday and Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana on Saturday. "I'm glad we are racing tonight," says Kerry. "The more time we have to get out there, the quicker we'll figure it out. We made some changes with equipment, and we think we may have just gone a little far. We should be o.k. I'm glad to be back in the Midwest for a while."
