Chip Ganassi selling to John Menard? One of the hottest stories in the garage Thursday was intense speculation that veteran team owner Chip Ganassi may be considering selling his two-team NASCAR operation to John Menard. Menard, who owns the Midwestern home improvement chain Menards, is a long-time racer, and he is currently sponsoring his son Paul's NASCAR team, part of the Richard Childress organization. Ganassi and Childress are both Chevy men. Childress supplied Ganassi's two teams (with #1-Jamie McMurray and #42-Juan Pablo Montoya) with engines until this season, when Ganassi switched to Hendrick motors. Of the sport's top eight team owners, Ganassi this season ranks seventh in finishes. Of particular disappointment is Montoya, who is averaging a 27th place finish; Montoya's last top-10 was at Michigan last June, and his last tour win was at Watkins Glen in the summer of 2010. McMurray's seventh at Martinsville last weekend was his best finish in over a year.

Not a lawyer, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night. However, if Menard was to buy out Ganassi, he would be buying all of the assets of Ganassi, and I would assume that all of the contracts signed by the drivers would be considered part of the assets of the race team.

It would be intesting for a lawyer to make a comment on this post.

I do remember that Larson's contract does have some outs if Ganassi cannot provide him the same type oppurtunities that he could get elsewhere.

The only contract I wish Kyle Larson had was one with a World of Outlaws team.

Since he's going stock car racing I wish he would hook up with Hendrick. Gordon is no spring chicken so I'd like to see Larson in the 24 in a couple of years. Im a Gordon fan and I wouldn't have to change numbers.

Here is a scenario that was presented to me by an insider. Young money stays in Nationwide 2 more years to enhance his career, with Menards backing, as long as Chevy supports the deal. Menard money and vendor leverage could fund it, Chevy gets some of their best people behind him (Larson). Let him run a Chevy powered sprint car, wing and non-wing out of Stewarts shop with Menard vendor sponsorship, get him in the Indy Lights race at Indy this year, in the Indy 500 the next 2 years, test a bunch with Cup cars and put him in 4 cup races next year, 10 cup races the following year. Then Chevy places him in Cup in the #24, 39,42 or 31 Chevy. The only hold up could be the sour relationship between Stewart and Menard, which dates back to Smoke's ugly departure from Menard's Indy Car team.

put him in the 42 cup car that juan seems to be going backwards in. 30th in points, no top fives, no top tens and average finish at 27th.

the menard deal with smoke? smoke had a better idea about his future also.

Read somewhere recently where Ganassi was taking some heat over people wanting to see Larson in either Montoya or McMurray's ride. Ganassi's response was that he has a long term contract with Larson with no clause that states that he has to have a certain timeline on moving Larson up. He specifically mentioned Kahne's deal with Ford and that Larson's deal has no such provision. Ganassi feels he has the kid locked up for years.

Not me, my hope is that Kyle takes a year or two to get some experience with fenders then signs with a top NASCAR team to run Cup full time. Then he can be like Smoke or KK and start a few USAC and WoO teams to funnel that Cup money back into my favorite form of racing.

I don't believe that for a minute. If you have a winner you put him in with the winners . I'd expect to see Kyle in the 1 or the 42 next year. No matter who owns this team . If they don't they will look pretty stupid in my eyes. The two knuckleheads they got in there now couldn't win if they had the best car on the track. I know if these two cars sponsors looked at Kyles track record they would be looking at Chip very closely. Especially if they have a chance for there Logo to be on TV for a few hours each week.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

I would think the move to cup would be decided as the season goes on .As for F1 that's about the only way I would watch it .Indy cars are just to dangerous in my opinion .Would like to see him cup and of course sprints and midgets.

Come on man, Im definately a Larson fan, but the kids run 4 Truck races and 4-5 Nationwide races...And hasnt won a race yet. So lets not jump the gun.... Hes not ready to fill the seat of Montoya or McMurray next season. Does somebody else need to? Probably. Remember that kid they called "sliced bread" the pressure didnt do him much justice. IMO 2 years in a Nationwide car at least maybe running a schedule simular to mentioned above (4-10 Cup Races a year) would be ideal. There really isnt a team in the Chevy camp that has their act together in both Nationwide and Cup. Ideally RCR cars in the Nationwide series and Hendrick in Cup. If Hendrick could get to him he could drive a SHR car in Cup till Gordon decided he was done.... Ok sorry to the pure Sprint Car fans of the board... rambling about Nascar... Off to L.A. Raceway to watch my 1st Sprint Car race of the year thankfully.

Juan "Pablum" Montoya is even more overrated than McMurray as far as Cup racers go.

Larson couldn't do any worse than both them...even having never raced a cup race at this point in his career.

Your name is opnwhlr yet you hate F1 huh? wink

I bet you just dont understand F1 cus you never cared to get into it, amiright?

F1 is too complex for most people, its true. For one thing, instead of 4 corners to memorize, gotta memorize about 40 corners... lol.

Larson would be perfect for F1. A nice young American who can drive anything. His small size is perfect for F1 as well.

I never liked Nascar. Sure the speeds are high but the perfomance of the cars is, boring. slow to accelerate etc etc

I like wild cars like 410 sprints and F1.
