I am seriously planning to make the 7 hour trek to attend this event. I know Elko Speedway is a paved track and an excellent overall facility. Looking forward to the dirt going on for the weekend the Outlaws and the Wissota Late Models are in town. I was curious if anyone has attended any of the sprint car or other dirt week events that this track has had in the past. Is the track racey, is there more then one groove, is it wide enough for side by side racing and passing. Also how well has the track held up during the course of the night. Thanks in advance.

Year after year the track gets better and better. A couple a years ago when they first started this deal the track was very rough and wore the dirt out and had spots of asphalt showing up. The last 4 sprint car races there they have all been great races. The track stayed some what tacky. They do a great job of maintaining it thoughout the night now as apossed to the first races there. The track is wide enough for side by side racing and you will see it all over the track. I cant wait to see the UMSS sprints there May 3rd and 4th then the WoO on May 10th. And over all the facility gets and A.

I'm partial to the support class the night of the Woo races Smile Hope to have at least 20 non wing cars there that night.

They leave the dirt on the track from the fall race and on account of the asphalt base a foot or two under the surface they don't see the frost problems that full time dirt tracks have to deal with. We've got another foot of snow coming tonight and hopefully the weather will turn around before the middle of May. This has been an extremely cold and snowy early spring in the upper Midwest.

I'm on the outside looking in this time after having resigning from writing a column for a paper that is distributed at Elko. I hope everyone has a great time down there, it has come around to where it's a pretty awesome Sprint Car track. I'll be listening to this one on Dirtvision from a half hour north of the Twin Cities wishing I was there. wink

I'm 7 hours NW of the Twin Cities and we still have about 2-3 feet of snow on the ground up here. I'm not a winter person by any means, and this has by far been the worst I can remember. I hope Mother Nature gives us a break for the event, I'm really pumped about the weekend of racing down there. I haven't been to Elko since the mid to late 90's. Cedar Lake is my track of choice in that area. Thanks all for the video and helpful info.

The Accuweather 25 day currently goes to May 5, just five days before their WoO race. The high for the 4th shows 65 for Elko with a low of 48 so if that holds til the 10th they should be alright. That far out we're just talking trends but I don't see any big jumps to 70's or 80's between now and then. Temp, cloud cover and wind direction and speed will be the determining factor at an early season race in Minnesota where the grandstand faces north if it's a 40 degree night. 60/40 can be just fine or can totally suck. The extended for Elko shows up and down from 40's to around 60 almost the entire time between now and then.

I'm not one of the in crowd for Elko or on the WoO list like I was with the last two media directors and I'm not a bleacher creature so I'll pass on this one. Either I'm running around reporting and taking pics in the infield or I stay home and do something else. I'm planning on attending Cedar Lake's School Bus race the following night to cover as track photographer for a friend. School buses along with B Mods, Hornets and Vintage Cars will be my racing fix that weekend. You ought to come out and see that one, it's a hoot and they pack the place to the rafters with school kids. We like to bring the school age grandkids out to that one. They love it. Of course I'm a huge Sprint Car fan since around 1960 so that nagging feeling that I should be at Elko will be hounding me but that will pass. It would be a cold day in a hot place before I start paying to get into races that cost more than two cases of Miller Lite so I can spend the night on my feet working. I'm not very smart but at least I've got that one figured out. LOL

Have fun down there if you end up going. Elko is a great track and the owner Tom Ryan really has the dirt figured out. In all seriousness I would give select body parts just to be there. It's only a half hour from our office in downtown St. Paul so it's really easy to get there. In the past when I was on the Elko list for IRA and UMSS I'd drive and park in a ramp across the street, get off at 3:30 and get to Elko by 4:15. You'll really enjoy that place. They've got the best grandstand in the state and a full service night club with closed circuit TV and popular Minneapolis bands after the races. The place absolutely rocks.

P.S. I've got a blog on my website where I've got my schedule posted for the season. A genuine USA made Gibson SG that ran over a few hundred and a few other obligations are limiting this season to 18 races, Back to the 50's and Car Craft Summer Nationals. You can check the blog on my site for the full schedule. If you plan on getting to any of those races let me know, I'd like to stop and introduce myself.

Stan, If you had a 4 wheeler to push me with I'd pay your way in but you'd have to be up in the pits pushing me, not spinning in circles with a camera in your face Smile

Great event to be at, last year your the Fall Nationals for the UMSS show there was 2 miserabley cold nights in the 30's and there was still a great turn out of fans.... People love to see the wings go around the track. Track has good banking and is usually always a heavy fast track. I haven't missed a dirt race at Elko since they have started and to be honest would love to see it go dirt full time (crossing fingers) only problem would be competion with other tracks like Cedar Lake and St Croix Valley, which has really turned they're track around the last couple of years. I think with the facility alone could definatly bring teams south of the cities to make a great event week in and week out.

I have never driven a 4 wheeler so you'd be risking life and limb. I've already written this one off but I'll see them at Cedar Lake. Looking out the window watching the plow go by racing is about the furthest thing from my mind right now. wink
