Goin' waaaaay back in the wayback machine to 1951...
Offies, Novis, race cars that looked like race cars. Lotsa drivers from (or at least largely resident in) LA and Central Cal including Jack McGrath, Troy Ruttman, Johnnie Parsons, Fred Agabashian, Sam Hanks, Walt Faulkner, Vukie, and Rodger Ward (the last two in their rookie rides at Indy). Walt & Troy driving for J.C. Rodger in a dirt car built by Bruce Bromme, Sr. Cars of all different descriptions from Frank Kurtis's shop in Glendale all over the place. Wilbur's old Maserati with a blown Offy in it. Duke, the ill-fated Lee Wallard and Always Fast Jack on the front row in three totally different looking cars. Murrell Belanger's stretched out Kurtis "super midget" in the winner's circle (again; though for the only time at Indy). Who could ask for more?

And a guy named (if I remember correctly) Larry Basaglia who arrived at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway each May 1 and spent the entire month camping in a station wagon - an ultimate sort of race fan. Of course that was back when the original pagoda was on the front stretch, there were two weekends with four full days of qualifying, there were many more cars entered than could possibly qualify for the race, and probably 250,000 people showed up for the opening day of qualifying. Last but not least a guy with a lot of talent but moderate means like Bromme could field a car for the race.

Bingo. Ain't commercialism great? (Where we be without it?) (At Perris or Ventura tonight; that's where.)
