Why does the WoO spread the California swing over a matter of 5-6 weeks? It seems like it would be such an added expense to the race teams as I assume most of the drivers and officials fly back and forth and crew members stay out there with their equipment. Do the crew members just shack up in hotels for weeks at a time or do they fly back and forth too? I know I'm not the one making the schedule and probably don't realize how hard it is but it just seems as if they would do a lot of 3 nights of week racing.
Just curious as to how this all works, not trying to start a bashing thread. Maybe Johnny will explain it, I know he chimes in from time to time.
Sorry if this has been asked before, I don't check the forums near as much as I use to.

Weather!
Can you imagine them trying to run these weeks back in Ohio or a similar area? I don't think so.
So far...zero rain outs and NO snow outs!

I know some of the guys stay with friends and leave their haulers at the shops of Calif. sprintcars. It would be the same if any team came this way. Everybody helps everyone out to make it through the season.

I'm thinking that this time of year alot of the country is closed up to racing anyways because of the weather so they just spend some time out in Cali where they are more assured of temperate weather. As well as I would guess that with the amount of money you put into 1 of these shows, the tracks all want a Fri or Sat show so they can maximize the attendance rather than a Sun. or Weds. night show and there are a quite a few tracks out there to get to.
I did make the comment that it seemed like only having a Fri. night show last weekend and no Sat. show seemed like a waste for alot of the guys who travel along ways to get there. I know with Easter being on Sun. they likely didn't want to hold a Sat. show but it seemed like they could have just had no races all weekend then if that is the case. I'm sure at the least Sammy didn't mind that they held last Fridays race.

They always get rained out in early april, so I think the decision was made to go where the weather is good.

Traffic congestion and commute time also play a role in scheduling at SOME Cali tracks.
For instance...it would not be wise to schedule a Wed night race at Perris. People in "that area" sometimes have up to a two hour commute from work to home. Wed night racing would not be wise.
On the other hand...Hanford, Tulare, Merced and Chico could probably support a mid-week race.
While we do, on occasion, get some April rain this year all has worked well so far. Besides..some of these teams and their crews are having their first opportunity to find out what CaliPornia is all about!
p.s. asparagus is great this time of year!

Most of the previous responses were essentially correct: we've spent more time in CA this year because of the better weather. Seems like March has been difficult (at best) back in the midwest, and so the thought is that while spending 5 weeks in CA and racing only on the weekends IS expensive, it's not really any more expensive than driving to a track and back in the midwest only to get rained out and not get the chance to race/make money. (Mid-week shows in CA have traditionally been difficult for promotors--I can only think of a handful that have even tried in the 17 years I've worked for the Outlaws.)
Having said that, March IS also traditionally the rainy season in CA as well, and last Saturday was left open as a rain date for any of the previous shows. I'm pleasantly surprised that it wasn't needed.
Looks like the forecast is favorable for both Antioch and Calistoga this weekend as well.

Asparagus season, sounds like a recipe for some terrible smelling port-a-potties

I would imagine that some teams probably rent out a garage/shop for a month to avoid traveling from time to time especially if they are in one state the whole time. I have heard of teams in the past having small garages in indiana and California for the Western swings.

I think you will find that the WoO teams are scattered amongst various shops through Central California.
