Wednesdays with Wayne – Two Very Different Tracks This Week!

(Bill W) April 3, 2013 – Two vastly different tracks await Wayne Johnson and the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team this weekend with the World of Outlaws in California. Friday night, the series heads to the tacky bullring in Antioch, while Calistoga's half-mile will be the venue on Saturday. The Knoxville, Iowa driver made the feature cut with the WoO in Merced last Friday, before running his 360 at Antioch on Saturday for a preview of this weekend at that track.

Still using his seven year old motor, Wayne qualified 25th quick on Friday night in Merced. "She is tiny," he says of Merced. "That's the most gear I've ever ran in a 410. We were just off. We didn't put the new motor in. We figured the older one would be o.k. at that place. You really can't give up anything with these guys qualifying. You need all the motor you can get."

Wayne failed to qualify for the main event through his heat race. "We just got a bad start going into turn one," he says. "We got blasted. I think I was last coming off of turn two. That was it."

He started at the tail of the main event, suffering a DNF. "It was hard to pass," says Wayne. "I just made a couple laps. When I got lapped, I decided to pull in. There was no reason to stay out there."

At Antioch on Saturday in the 360, Wayne timed 18th and won his heat from the front row. He pulled in during the feature on a rainy night. "It was raining from the B main on," he says. "The racetrack was just greasy. It kept raining. I wasn't going anywhere, so I pulled it in. It was a slick one, but they finished that race in the rain."

Antioch Speedway's bullring is on tap for the WoO on Friday, while Saturday at Calistoga Speedway will give drivers a chance to stretch their legs a bit. "It's going to have to get a lot wider to get racy on Friday at Antioch," says Wayne. "Going to Calistoga…I don't know if I'll remember how to run a half-mile!"

Wayne is optimistic after two tough weeks in California. "We haven't been good the last couple weeks," he says. "We'll get our new Rider engine in there, and give it our best shot."

You'll never meet a better guy in a drivers suit than Wayne Johnson bar none! It's a pleasure to know him and hang out from time to time during the race season. Good luck at Antioch and Calistoga Wayne.
