Topic: Advice for a First Time Visitor to PA

I booked my vacation today... heading to the greatness of Central PA for 3 nights of 410s, URC vs 358s, ARDC midgets & USAC sprints doing the East Tour... The Grove, Lincoln & Susquehanna. Gonna hit the Eastern Motorsports Museum to see some cool stuff. My questions are simple: 1) What other cool stuff should I do while in the area during the day? 2) What places should I go eat at that I can't in Texas? 3) What race track food at those 3 places are "must-haves"? Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Activities...?...A trip to Gettysburg which is just 20 minutes south of the Museum...
Food you can't get in Texas...?...Maryland crab cakes would be my choice...Granted, you'll be in PA, but it's worth the ride south...
Track food...?...Old Bay wings @ Lincoln...Of course, provided that they decided to cook em...

We have short trip planned to Williams Grove Outlaw race in July, first time to the track. Don't know your dates/method of travel, but we are flying to Baltimore and renting a car. Our plans include a tour of the Harley factory in York, perhaps saunter over to Hershey and maybe Intercourse to Amish land. We had Gettysburg planned also and was not aware of the Museum. On our list now since it is half way between the Grove and Gettysburg, catch it on our way back to Baltimore. We staying one extra night down in Maryland to catch a visit to the US Naval Academy. Ditto Stan's comments on the crab cakes, been there, done that, and will do again!!

The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg is worth the trip. I like the Springhouse Tavern in the Dobbin House in Gettysburg for eats there. Hershey is good for kids, and folks like me who like the coasters and chocolate. EMMR is also worth the trip. Plenty to do...

You can get the crab Cake off the Rt 30 seafood truck at Lincoln, also the $7.00 pit beef, ham and pulled pork sammy's at lincoln are the BOMB! Over a Pound of meat in those babies.

I thought Hershey was a waste of time. For years I'd heard you could smell the chocolate on the outskirts of town, now factory has moved elsewhere, its just a "chocolate theme park".
EMMR Museum is terrific. I like to drive around the beautiful countryside & find lakes & rivers for swimming. Last summer after PA Speedweek I asked some locals & was jumping off a rope swing into Schuykill River in woods of NE Pennsylvania (not polluted Philly area). Three hours later I was a nervous wreck fighting traffic entering Holland Tunnel into NYC to go dancing. After watching the most ballsy drivers on earth for 3 days & loving it, aggressive pricks of NY/NJ area had me literally shaking like a leaf (4 lanes merging to one!)

If your coming in through BWI I recommend G & M for crab cakes. Its just of 695 near BWI. I strongly recommend against anything from the pit beef trailer at Lincoln although I eat it on a regular basis its NOT good food or food that you MUST have on your trip.

Lincoln has GREAT French Fries, great racing and my favorite announcer in the country. Get to know your neighbors there, usually opinionated and often knowledgable. Stevie Smith's Mom used to have (hope she still does) a very good sub shop on the main road heading towards Gettsburg in New Oxford, hometown of the late G-Man. You'll love this trip....

Avoid G & M and go to Snyders Restaurant which is a quarter mile from there on the opposite side of the road...It's a much better crab cake...
I agree about Lincoln's Pit Beef trailer, other than the Old Bay Wings, everything tastes like a salt lick...

When we went up there back in 2011, also being from Texas.
We visited Williams Grove when Khane was punted out of the track by Dolansky.
Went to Hershey and all we did was the tour portion, the part of making your own candy bar was cool, not free to make though.
Visited Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery in Lititz, PA Very small place but was very interesting and informative. Worth the stop if you are in the area.
Went and ran some laps on Bobby Allen's go kart track. One of Jason Myers pit crew guys was there and raced with my boys on the 100 lap slick track event. Cool setup there and my wife and I rode the karts on the inside track.
Main purpose of the whole trip was to go to Oswego Speedway in New York, we just happened to work in the Friday not WoO show at Williams Grove.

Same as TxOutlaw
We are also coming to the July races at Williams Grove, 1st
Time out of KC.
We get there early Friday morning thru BWI and also have a
car, We don't go home till Monday afternoon, Planning on doing both race nights
and catching a Washington Nationals game on Sunday afternoon. We too are looking
for ideas on eats (not necessarily track food) Where to stay, not cheap, but
not high dollar anyway, We do Hampton Inn's Comfort Suites, Holiday Inn express
etc mostly.
Ideas for must see stuff for fun is appreciated from the PA folks!

Correct...I pack a cooler full of deer park and I live just 45 miles south of the PA line...#hersheysquirts

Skip Lincoln and go to the USAC race at Port Royal. If you get into the area on Thursday a USAC visit to Path Valley is also on the schedule. Truthfully , you can't go wrong doing anything in central PA!

I agree with tenter on a trip to Path Valley...By far, PA's best track...I also agree, if track food is a high priority, Port Royal has the best food...Lincoln has better racing, but Port has the best food...As far as a Philly Cheese Steak goes, cheese whiz on ground chuck is worst than a horse burger @ SSP... :p
