Nick Green Off To a Solid Start In 2013
San Jose, CA – April 1, 2013 – The long awaited and much anticipated start to the 2013 season has finally arrived in Northern California. Although there have been a handful of races run already this year, things are really beginning to pick up as opening nights for both the Taco Bravo Sprint Car Series and the Civil War Sprint Car Series were held this past weekend.
Nick Green returned to the seat of the family-owned, orange #14 with opening night of the Taco Bravo Sprint Car Series at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA. Although wet track conditions delayed the start of the night, fans were treated to a great opening night of racing. With the World of Outlaws running near by the same night, the car counts were down slightly, but Nick qualified a strong 3rd out of the 18 cars in the pits. Starting from the 3rd position in the heat, Nick fell back to the 5th and final transfer spot but was able to hold on and continue straight to the main event. A rare “0” inversion pill was pulled which put Justin Sanders and Brad Furr on the front row, with Nick lining up 3rd. Nick quickly slotted into 3rd on the start as all three leaders set a blistering pace on the tacky and fast track. Nick capitalized on an early restart and took second from Brad Furr and quickly set his sights on Sanders for the lead. As the lead duo approached traffic Nick closed to the rear bumper of Sanders, but a mistake in traffic would cause Nick to fall back to 4th where he eventually finished. After the race Nick had this to say, “It was a really strong, solid, night to start off the year. I’m definitely a little disappointed in myself with the mistake I made in traffic, but that happens. I’m really happy with all of the work dad and I have put in over the winter and the changes and improvements we made are already showing. Some of these guys have already run a few races so I’m sure in a week or two when we get some momentum going we’ll be where we need to be and contending for the win.”
Despite the forecast for a chance of rain, Nick and the team headed to Antioch Speedway on Saturday night for the Civil War Sprint Car Series Opener. Building on what they learned from the night before, Nick went out and posted the 9th quick time out of 30 strongly competitive cars in the pits. Some minor adjustments and good aggression in the heat saw Nick charge from 4th to 1st and go on to win comfortably and transfer straight to the main event. The rain began to fall just as the main event was pushing onto the track and the officials made the call to try and get the race in. After being trapped in the grease on the bottom of the track, Nick fell from his 3rd starting spot to 6th before the first yellow came out on lap 3. On the ensuing restart, Shawn Wright would bring out a quick red bringing the event to a stop. While sitting under the red, the rains increased and the track conditions got much sloppier than before. When the cars were re-fired, Nick made the decision to pull the car in to the pits and relinquish his position as he didn’t feel comfortable with the track conditions. “It was a tough call to make, but I stand by my decision to pull the car in. Obviously the race continued on, but we’re not racing for points in this series and I felt the risk was greater than the reward. As a competitor I wanted to run the race, but being on the budget we are I would rather save the car to race another night than to crash in a rain soaked mud race and have to sit out a few weeks.”
This coming weekend we’ll see Nick back in action at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA on Friday 4/5 and then making the tow down to Kings Speedway in Hanford, CA for the Rebel Cup Sprint Car’s Season Opener. “Coming off the weekend we had, I’m really looking forward to getting back into the car. Momentum and confidence are big factors in racing and we have a lot of both right now. I love racing Watsonville with the Taco Bravo guys and Hanford has been one of my favorite tracks for years. When things are going good all you want to do is be in the race car and keep racing. Even though we are only 2 races into a long season, that’s how I already feel.”
