I'm a Michigander with an upcoming vacation in Northern California and am planning to head to Calistoga for the April 6 WoO event. Any suggestions for a first time visitor to Calistoga? I see there are covered or uncovered stands - preferences? We will stay for 2 nights - any suggestions for activities for Sunday? Travelling with wife and 15 and 10 year old sons.

You are headed to one of the most beautiful area's of California my friend. Take in the beauty of Napa Valley. There's a lot of choices. Tour some of the wineries that line the valley or maybe enjoy the redwood forest at Muir Woods. There's a lot of good dinning choices right on the main drag in Calistoga or check out one of my favorite places for pre race food, Gott's Roadside on highway 128 in St Helena. See you at the races!

I hear they brought in new clay and put alot of banking in the corners. I have to check this out. As for the grandstand, I like the big covered stands. I think it comes with a pit pass. If you get a chance to go to San Francisco, check out the new BayBridge light show after dark.

I nearly always sit in the uncovered grandstand -- section 10 or 11. But either grandstand at Calistoga is fine. The most important thing is to sit toward the top so that you can see over all of the stuff in the infield.
I hope you're going to the WoO race at Antioch the night before. Antioch doesn't have the scenery that Calistoga does, but Antioch is a classic, elbows-up bullring and the racing can be wild.

Calistoga is a BIG half mile. The covered stands are at turn one, they're OK but if you want a better view of the whole track, I'd recommend seats up high behind the flag stand - Sections 10 or 11 as I recall. This is one of the most beautiful tracks in the country and the town of Calistoga is worth the trip even without races. Great variety of shops, hot springs, mud baths, and restaurants downtown. And of course world class wines are produced in the Napa Valley. Have fun!

Wineries for the parents, some of them are kid friendly. Sterling Vinyeards in Calistoga has a tram ride up to the hilltop winery that has a cool view. Clos Pegase not far from there has a cool tour with a cave that may be interesting for the kids. If wineries aren't your thing, there is a 6 Flags Discovery Kingdom down in Vallejo that has some good coasters and animal stuff.
At the track, I prefer the covered stands

Sorry to say, 'Stoga grand stand ticket doesn't come with a pit pass. FYI. In fact, you can't get into the stands WITH a pit pass . . .

Yes. What Grove is referring to is the old guard Mike Kinney days at Calistoga so I do know exactly what he is referring to. You can thank the new speedway management for many of the new and better things we enjoy at Calistoga Speedway now a days.

The one time I went to an Outlaw show at Calistoga I went with a friend who had been there many times. He took me to the pits not the stands for my first time there. When hotlaps started we were in the the infield in turn 1. All I could say was WOW! These guys haul the mail into that corner with rocks tairing holes in the wings of the cars behind them. It was a great show and glad I was in the pits and not the stands.
With the new Clay and Banking. I think you guys will be in for even faster laptimes without the rocks. I am a little jelious of all you going to this race.

The flagstand and announcer's booth are located at Section 8. Where ever you end up in the stands, get as high up as you can.
