Wednesdays with Wayne – Living on Tucson Time!

(Bill W) February 20, 2013 – Wayne Johnson is headed west to Tucson to get the 2013 campaign underway for the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team. The team remains from last season as they tackle this weekend's Lucas Oil ASCS National opener at Tucson International Raceway in Arizona Friday and Saturday.

The consistency will be huge as the team follows up a successful season that saw fifteen wins including the season ending $10,000 to win Western World in Peoria, Arizona. "Everyone is back on board with the team, which is awesome," says Wayne. "I can't tell you how happy I am. Todd (Carlile), Vern Rengen, Ray Williams, Byron Sebastian, and everyone else…they are all back and helping out. Smiley's is helping us out with tires again. We've got the Oil Medics, Outlaw Wings…everyone is intact. I do have a new decal guy, 517 Designs. Tim at Canyon Apparel has always been on board."

Little changes are planned as far as equipment. "The only change with the car is we are back on Weld Wheels," says Wayne. "We still have Outlaw Wings, Maxim chassis, Fisher motors and Super Shox. Brian has really stepped up and helped me with the shocks this year. Doug and Slippy are back to help me with the team. Doug was 'Down Under' and Slippy went back home to Washington for a while, so neither got a good taste of Iowa winter."

This weekend, Wayne will try to turn his bad luck at Tucson around. "We've struggled at Tucson lately here," he admits. "We were good there the first year we went out. I'm looking forward to getting back in the car. We struggled a bit in Australia, but I think we should be alright."

The Knoxville, Iowa driver is happy to have his team together for the second straight year. "It gives you confidence when things stay the same," he says. "Consistency is really a key in this sport, and we have a great team of people that make this work. We've got some new 410 motors that we are excited about utilizing this year too."

Wayne will be utilizing those power plants with the World of Outlaws after two ASCS weekends. "We've got a full trip planned here out West," he says. "We'll run with ASCS at Tucson and Yuma. Then we'll run with the World of Outlaws at Las Vegas and back to Tucson too."

Wayne's Fast Facts

Wayne won the 2010 "Ronald Laney King of the 360's" at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Florida. The win came aboard Glenn Styres #0x and marked the fourth consecutive year that Wayne registered a feature win in Florida. The win paid $14,500. The four wins were evenly split between 410 and 360 competition. In 2007, he won with USCS at the North Florida Speedway in Lake City. He beat the All Stars (with plenty of WoO in the house) at Volusia Speedway Park in 2008, beat the All Stars again at East Bay in 2009, before winning the "King of the 360's" in 2010.

Partner of the Week – The Oil Medics

Wayne says, "We had some problems with our hauler this week around Fort Worth, and Bill Jewell helped get us back on the road. He fixed it, and put some "air tabs" on our truck. It saves us about a mile per gallon with our fuel mileage."
