This is a great video showing just how little a guy is actually on the throttle on a slick track. From the stands it appears that drivers are gassing it and spinning the tires at will but if you listen closely you can hear that Dale only actually over spins his tires a couple of times and rarely goes full throttle. It takes great patience to drive efficiently on a slick track and still keep your momentum up. From the in car camera you can see just how slow it feels to the driver when you can't just mash the loud pedal. If not for Kraig Kinser's bobble in front of him he would have easily won that race, but that is how quickly your fortunes can change on a one lane track. Great video!

Its blocked now, my guess is that it was due to putting music on top of it, Bands like Coldplay don't really like there music being used when there not being paid or credited. I know the guy that made and posted it probably wasn't making any money on it but the music industry is pretty fussy about it now.

One minor correction! Great post by the way. Sounds like you are a present or retired driver - correct? I was suprised by this video on first watch - from the stands, the loud roar makes you think they are at 100% throttle for 85% of the front straight, and then you watch this, and you realize, it's a much different perspective from the cockpit.

See above for the link for the new, re-edited video.

Can't keep a hard-working video producer down.

.. and shooting, and editing, and lugging the cameras to and from the track, and installing GoPro on the car, retrieving it after the race, etc.

You are welcome.

Go to 1:04, and there's a closer look at the track surface.

And hopefully you got paid big bucks for all that work. How was my comment a dig at you? If it helps: Thanks for posting. May you make a million bucks off that video.

Come out to California and hit the Thunderbowl Raceway if you want to see a true hammerdown white knuckle sprint car experience. Hell even when the TBowl goes dry to the bone slick its still super exciting.

Cheers!

My apologies - I did not think your comment was a dig at me. My first and last name is not prominent on my YouTube page, so some make think I'm bringing my "crew" or "posse" to the track with me. I'm a one man "posse". On the way up to VSP for the WoO show tonight, I decide where the posse eats, and I get to choose all the music played on the MP3 player. Smile

In my spare time, I also write this column, and I hope you'll be a reader:

Yes, I am a former 410 driver. The first time I saw a video of myself on a slick track I was like "Wow! On video it looks like I'm flying into the turns and really buzzing the tires." However, in reality from the cockpit it felt like I was barely moving and you just keep half-pedaling and waiting for the rear tires to hook up. You are rarely, if ever, full-throttle on a shiny slick track like the one in this video. There are things you can do to help the driver on shiny slick tracks like the one in the video by de-tuning the motor, running more or less gear (depending on driving style), different shock packages, running reverse torsion bars (changing the transition of weight of the car significantly), wing angle, etc... but there is still no substitute for the performance of your right foot. Soft-pedaling or half-pedaling is the best traction control (without the use of an illegal device) there is. The thing I found interesting when I was racing (2000's) was the difference between using more gear or less gear on a slick track. Some guys like to use more gear to help slow the car down on corner entry as they felt it helped them keep the car straighter on entry. Other guys, like myself, preferred to run less gear and sort of "kill" the torque of the motor allowing you to use more throttle without increasing wheel spin. Either way, it's still difficult to keep your momentum up on a shiny slick track. I can remember an All-star race in the early 2000's on a tight 1/4 mile track in which the normal gear ratio at that particular track was in the 5:80's-5:90's. It was super slick that night and the winner ran a 5:08 gear in the feature and just drove away from every one! His motor sounded like it was sick or breaking up, but he was able to keep from spinning his tires and like I said, just drove away from every one! On the flip side of that at another All-star race in the mid 2000's at a slightly bigger track where the normal gear ratios were in the 5:70's-5:80's the feature winner that night chose to run a something around the 6:00 range in the feature and just dusted the field by hugging the bottom and driving in straighter than anyone else could. He won by about half a lap when every one else put in 5:60's trying to de-tune their motors and run the top. It always comes down to whatever you are comfortable with. I always liked killing the torque of the motor and using more pedal, but it wasn't always the right choice, LOL!
