We've decided that we're going to do something for Don. Something that without question he would have loved to have done himself, if he was here and able to do it. We're simply going to gather some money together and do with it as Don would have, give it to the sport he loved and deeply cared about, sprint car racing. And since Don was passionate about and very involved with the URA, there is no question in my mind that he would like to see this money go toward the racers/teams who show up for the first URA show at Victorville. Something I know he would have done himself.
I've contacted Scotty with this idea, and he's going to find a Don Flanders type of way to get the money to the racers/teams, and to also help us find a appropriate way to collect the donations for Don. He's working on the later now. . Randy, Scotty and myself would like to start it out with a $300 donation in Don's name to be given away in the same spirit as Don's, for the love of the sport. . Let me be clear... This idea did not come from or was suggested by anyone involved with the URA; except Don of course. . RIP buddy, I'll see ya at the track.

Ok it's getting close to being worked out and WAGS, Ken Wagner, is going to collect the money for "something for Don". Ken will have a post with the info soon. Again, the money will be distributed as close as we can to a "Don Flanders type of way".
Hey, if any of you guy's have any ideas that might be helpful, post them please.

I spoke with Ken Wagner on the phone yesterday and he was more than happy to become a part of what we're doing. Not only is he going to be collecting the money, he's also going to be involved in it's distribution as well. In other words, Ken will be a very big part of what we're doing.
Right now we're in the process of making contributing possible online, and how it will be presented. At this point I know WAGS will be at the Perris opening and maybe Canyon as well to except contributions in Don's behalf, and Scotty and that team is putting together some things to honor Don at the opening at Route 66.

I am so moved by this gesture. What you guys have decided to do for your friend Don is extremely generous and way cool. I can't think of a better treasurer than Mr. Wags...he certainly has the experience collecting and distibuting money for our racers, which I respect and appreciate. Our sport could use a lot more people like you guys! I am really looking forward to celebrating the life of Mr. Flanders with the racing community next month and watching his concept become a reality.
Count me in. I have $100 to add to the pot.

I can't wait to get this ( something for Don ) fund going . And maybe I'm being selfish but I sure will miss my buddy standing up on the top row with us in a couple of weeks at the copper on dirt. Thank you Ken Wagner for gathering and distributing these funds . I'll miss you buddy. See you at the races. Randy.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

Thanks Bobby and I knew you'd step up for Don. I'll see you at Canyon my friend, and hopefully at Steve Strouds Racers Advantage museum too.

That's right, we had a pretty good crew there that day. I remember introducing Don to Steve and after some story telling and a tour of the museum Don started sharing his vision of a affordable engine with him. I decided to leave those two together to talk, and they did for some time. After meeting Doug and looking around some more, Don walked over with a smile on his face. What's up I said, what did he say? Don told me that Steve thought it was a great idea, and to contact him when it comes time to move on it... It was a good day.

The California Hall of Fame race will be held this year on Aug. 17th at the PAS, Don Flanders has been a major contributor every year, it is fitting that we honor him for his generosity and also as a long time racing family member, Don was a sprint car fan way back over 30 years ago, I'm looking for suggestions but think something along the lines of first team that does not transfer from the "B" main to the "A" main with the amount collected not announced until after the "B" main is over. Something Don would do very often was give me a sealed envelope containing cash and ask me to hand it to a certain team and ask that it be kept off the PA or himself come down and give out a few bucks to the low buck teams, his large contributions to the highest finishing 360 or last place finish in the "A" main came from the heart, not just someone looking for attention. There is not enough room to honor everyone but Don deserves something special for the Hall of Fame race, he certainly helped make it an event in the past. I didn't keep track of the times he handed me $100, $500 etc, but sure wish I did...RIP Don.

Great post Chris and a lot of good ideas but to be clear and as stated in my opening post on this thread "And since Don was passionate about and very involved with the URA, there is no question in my mind that he would like to see this money go toward the racers/teams who show up for the first URA show at Victorville. Something I know he would have done himself"... The money we are collecting at this time will be going to the racers/ teams that show up at Victorville for the series that Don personally work so hard to see come about, the URA.
I just got off the phone with wags, Ken Wagner, and he said that you could mail him a contribution for "something for Don" at his home in Las Vegas and he's at 429 Flores Circle, Las Vegas Nevada, 89123. Wags will also be excepting donations at the Copper on Dirt March 1st and 2nd for starters, and at the opening of the new URA series as well.
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

We'll it's almost here and thanks to everyone who's embraced the "something for Don" idea, it's been a big success and it's only going to get better!
I'll be coming in Friday for practice and I hope to see more than a few cars there that have something out of the box that they'll be shaking down for the Saturday race. If that's you, or you know of someone who "gets it" and will be there, please let us know.
Thanks to you all!
Kenny

I too would like to say thank you to all of Don's friends who have supported his memory....obviously Don and I had a special connection. We shared the same track for a while with helmets on. We then later shared a dream of racing for the sake of racing and a common goal of bringing BADASS sprint cars back to as many race tracks as we could. We didn't care what the letters were in front of the series......no politics...no whining....no backstabbing......non of our names in lights......no overpromotion.....just BADASS sprint cars.......nuff said
