http://vimeo.com/38922379 leads to a very high-quality, five-minute film of round-de-round roadster racing at what appears to be the old (and very short-lived) San Diego Speedway in the Miramar area north of SD proper; thus about 1947 ...... Jim Rathman is one of the drivers ...... for the younger folks here, these cars were the post-war evolution of pre-war stuff raced on the "road course" in the hills behind Legion Ascot (and elsewhere) around LA by the likes of Ted Horn and Kelly Petillo in the mid-'30s ...... over time, they morphed into the roadsters driven by Jack McGrath and Walt Faulkner at Carrell Speedway just north of the later Ascot Park track in Gardena ...... And those cars morphed into "big cars" or "sprint cars" under the influence of post-war midget designers like Frank Curtis and Lujie Lusovsky.

Didn't Bob McCoy become an painter. I seem to remember that he did paintings of the old modified sportsman cars in action.

Bob McCoy is a very gifted artist. He's done a number of pieces. Back in the day when cars were lettered and numbered by hand he did quite a bit of that. I can remember him lettering a Super Stock (early Cajon Speedway/ECSCRA days) for us in probably about 1964. It was a 1954 Ford with a 427 in it. If I remember correctly, he did the numbers and lettering in a "Flintstone" motif. There is a coffee table book about his life and career.
