I've been advised that "Papa Bill" Bishop has passed away after a long illness. He was certainly one of the pioneers in Oklahoma City racing, fielding cars for a long line of well-known drivers, building winning cars in a lot of different divisions, and helping out countless racers over the years. My thoughts go out to his family.
Funeral arrangements are pending at this time, but it will be some time next week.

I know he will be greatly missed by all of us. I'm gonna miss telling him how much fun we had on the weekends and trying to get him to come out with us lol.
I will have some in memory of stickers today. You can stop by my shop or catch me at the races sometime tonight.
I-240 and may, northeast corner of Albertson's parking lot.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

That sucks. You just couldn't beat going down there to the shop and listening to the stories. He always took good care of me when I was in there. Our prayers to the family in this tough time. The Jones Family.

Good guy. Who here remembers that four wheel independent suspension champ car from the mid-80's? It always seemed to be a handful for whoever was behind the wheel.

Good man. He forgot more than most will ever know about racing.

I remember the car well. Lary Allen seemed to be the only one to do anything in it.

If Bill were here he'd tell you a few more things about that car.Towards the end they started to understand the monster they created but the frame had been through so many crashes that they decided it was time for a new car. They went for the traditional route the next time. Bill will tell you that the suspension peices went to a T-bucket street rod project in Tulsa. The frame went to the trash. Years later Sammy Swindell would call on occassion to get some tips for his IDF sprinter which was banned by the WoO. Had Sammy completed his work, we might have been seeing these cars today.

Being a MWC Bomber alum., I always liked the car because of it's colors.
If I remember correctly, one USAC car owner said that Bishops experimental car would have been a great pavement car for USAC.
Please post any and all stories you remember about Mr. Bishop here for all of us to read and enjoy. Kinda of a tribute post you might say.
R.I.P. Mr. Biship

When they first finished the IS car, they wanted an experienced driver to wring it out, so they brought Buddy Cagle out of retirement. I remember the first night he tried it at the Fairgrounds. Suffice to say it wasn't any fun for Buddy. They made a lot of progress on a basic setup, but Buddy realized he was about to crash the car if he tried to go any faster. What they needed, he figured, was a younger driver who hadn't crashed enough yet. Reckon they found one or two.
Bill told me about taking a mini sprint to Pocola one time, with Gary Flatt tagging along to help out and maybe pick up a ride. Anyone whose ever been to Pocola can tell you it's pretty deep water for a minisprint. After a few hot laps, the assigned driver came in and said "Mr Bishop, if you'd like to put Gary in the car, it would be alright with me." One thing Bill insisted on was a driver who'd put his foot in it. This is Gary in the house sprinter in August of '93.

I forgot how nice looking his equipment was. That sprint is very sharp.
