I have read some rumors that the track is closing its doors. I haven't heard as to why or even if this is really true. Does anybody have any information?

No official announcements have been made, but this rumor likely has some legs to it.

Years ago the owners dumped a bunch of ground up roofing material in the parking lot and spread it out in an attempt to improve things. I guess that's where the EPA problem would have come from. What is disputed is who got the city and EPA involved with it.

I live in Fort Worth and I will not be going to the ASCS shows at KSP. The track sucks for as being a good sprint car track. If you like follow the leader, then the track is for you. If not, I would spend my money else where.

There is no denying that one of the previous owners did grind up a bunch of old roofing material and put it down in the parking lot. This much is true.
By all accounts, the EPA is involved because apparently some of the roofing material that was ground up has some bad stuff in it that is impacting the water tables.
What is completely unknown is how the EPA got involved. Some fingers are pointed at KSP. Some are pointed at an ex-sponsor. Some are pointed at some of the other neighbors. Some are pointed at City Hall. IMO. I would be looking at the natural gas companies that have wells under both properties. It makes sense to me that they would be the most interested in making sure that the water tables were clean, and would be the first to report issues.
I have a hard time believing KSP would be involved. Not because they are church mice, but because I could not imagine any race track actively contacting the EPA about anything. Once the EPA looks at Cowtown, it would not be difficult to start pointing it's nose at KSP. Between all of the oil that is dumped on the track and in the pits, all of the noise issue, and all of the dust issues, I can not believe any track would look forward to a visit by the EPA.

What I have heard and this is second hand info is that someone that has a sprint car called the city of Kennedale to come out and check on a sewage problem at the track. Should be an interesting story once all the facts get out.

You have heard pretty well. The someone with a sprint car, is supposedly hooking up with a well known driver sprint car driver for ASCS 2013 in a two car team.
And there was a post here on hoseheads just a few days back warning that well known driver be careful with who he is hooking up with for 2013..........

Hence, as is/was the case with the fairgrounds track here in Oklahoma City. With all the years of spilled oil, fuel, etc. the land where the track stood can not be used for anything other than a parking lot.

I never could figure that out......Let's bitch about the little bit of oil spilled on a track over the years, then dump hundreds of gallons of oil on the dirt to promote adhesion for the oil based asphalt.......

exactly.
and it's all BS. The finger pointing a poster above was talking about is probably how it happened. But I strongly doubt that a natural gas company - on their own accord - felt obligated to check it out. Especially in Texas....
From what I've read - sounds like the most immediate problem, and the one shutting them down right now - is with the electrical.
No one just went on a periodical checkup and came up with this. Think bigger than racing - there are thousands of buildings or venues that are in violations of multiple codes. In State Fair Speedway's case.......the fair board and the city had themselves a grand plan. Or thought they did.
In Cowtown's case......it really looks as if this was instigated by agents within the sport and that area. The rumors don't seem so far fetched when you consider certain events that happened over the final half of the season.... and just like how State Fair Speedway was gutted - it's two issues beng raised not one. The first is a much more expansive, kind of head scratching WTF problem - in OKC it was ADA compliancy - at Cowtown it's ground up shingles. The second issue raised with both - and one could speculate that it is in effort to dissuade the venue from fixing the first.......electrical.
In Oklahoma City's case it was the fair board and the city that wanted to gut it. At least you knew who the enemy was. In this case.......I strongly doubt that the EPA showed up to gut this place on their own accord. It does kind of sound like there might be a Benedict Arnold within the ranks....

If indeed a racer instigated all this crap against Cowtown Speedway, I feel evryone from fans to promoters need to band together and not support this racer. Don't let him race at your track, don't support anything tied to his team ie order any printing from his company assuming this is the individual being referenced here. Cowtown is a neat racey little track, what a shame it might close. Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, TX is outside of Austin, TX and is a really nice 3/8ths track that was just built this year. They have 305 sprints planned for regular shows and on July 4th they have ASCS sprints scheduled. I can't wait to check the track out when I am in Austin. They are doing things right and with deep pockets behind it all.

There are people in Kennedale that have been trying to get this track closed for years. Haven't confirmed this, but was told years ago that the city put something in effect that when/if the track is ever sold, it cannot continue. That's why the current owner allows people to come in and just promote races, but doesn't sell. Anyone else heard this?

Let's just say his name: Shawn Petersen of Print Place. He feels that Kevin Ramey's best chance of success at Kennedale Raceway Park is if Cowtown stays closed. I like Johnny Herrera but he is getting in a bed with a rattlesnake.

If it is true that Shawn Peterson is the individual that caused the Cowtown situation, then I applaud you for havin the balls to speak out. If he is responsible, then his name should be broadcast nationwide and not allowed at any racetrack.

Jeff Martinez, promoter of Cowtown Speedway posted this on his FaceBook page on Tuesday....
"""Lets get this straight I've kept my mouth shut didn't blame ksp and never said cowtown was closed said was working on issue with city everybody else is saying that I don't know if its leaving or not waiting on owners to decide what to do thank y'all"""
Let's hope that Cowtown Speedway will remain open. If it will be, making a announcement to the fans and racers of Cowtown Speedway in a timely fashion will be a good thing. Many dedicated and loyal Cowtown people would like to have ample time to be ready for the 2013 season. Not so much of a need for the fans, but most definately for the racers.
It is in the city records as to where the complaints came from about roofing material issues. The complaints have been a on going thing but never resolved. The city finally investigated after sitting on it's hands over this for some time. In the visit, they found the roofing material issues and other factors that needed to be addressed. Cowtown officials called in Oncore ( Electrical supplier ) to install a electrical meter because they had been running under the meter of a nearby resident... this is a major no-no. The electrical company found various concerns and would not install the meter until those things could be repaired first.
A feud has been simmering for quite some time between two of Cowtowns major sponsors and it boiled over recently. One of the two major sponsors has stopped supporting Cowtown and is now sponsoring events at KSP next door. That sponsor was upset over how the Cowtown promoter was handling various things and vowed to go to war and never support Cowtown again. This all has been going on for months and all of a sudden, Cowtown has city officials showing up. The people that asked the city to check on Cowtown was not Kennedale Speedway Park next door. It was not the owner of Print Place who was once a big sponsor to Cowtown Speedway. It was the residential neighbor next to Cowtown that has roofing material floating onto her property while it rained over the past years. They finally had enough and had to do what they had to do. Flooding of draining systems and contaminating her property is a pretty good reason to bring a end to it. How many of us can not understand her position?
It is going to be VERY VERY expensive to solve the neglected issues that Cowtown has. Maybe more money than what may be worth to Cowtown to invest. But no matter what, it will have to fix the mentioned above items before it can open it's gates again. Cowtown will also need to fix it's water source as it has been using the neighboring tracks water for the last few years. The track next door will no longer be risk having enough water in it's pond to supply two tracks. Cowtown has already been notified of the water issue over a month ago.
Kennedale Speedway Park officials was at Cowtown Speedway last Saturday in a effort to offer help. KSP is not trying to shut down Cowtown.
I have attended some of the Kennedale Chamber of Commerce metting this past year. I read all news letters from the city. I also have had many great conversations with the various business owners at Chamber meetings and events. They never have indicated to me that the city is out to get Cowtown, Kennedale Speedway Park or the dragway that all are in the city of Kennedale.
Please hope for the best for Cowtown. I enjoy going to this track when possible and have offered my support to them. In closing, I am the event announcer for Mountain Creek Speedway and Kennedale Speedway Park. My views and opinions are shared by many of my co workers. NOBODY likes to see a raceway close down... NOBODY!
