Isn’t Tony Stewart the one they call “Smoke?”

NASCAR’s most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., has licensed his name and likeness to a cigar. The “Dale Earnhardt JR” is made by Louisville, Ky.-based Ted’s Cigars, and features Earnhardt’s ‘88’ car number, a facsimile of his signature and his photo on its packaging.

Tobacco advertising has been banned by law in NASCAR and other sports since 2010, and the immensely popular auto racing organization prides itself on a squeaky-clean image.

But neither the law nor NASCAR has a rule barring drivers, who operate as independent contractors and retain ownership of their branding, from endorsing tobacco or any other products outside of their relationship with the series.

Found this at fox.com.....gotta luv drivers who are always looking for additional ways to make a few buck$ here and there!

Sorry, but I'm not buying NASCAR as "squeaky clean". How many people a year are killed by drunk drivers? And yet the current NASCAR champ has Miller Lite all over everything he does. And of course there are quite a few other alcohol companies involved. I personally don't have an issue with Jr's cigar or Keselowski's Miller Lite. However, I would say if NASCAR really wants a "squeaky clean" image, then Jr's cigar is the least of it's problems.

At times, I think it is more Kelley than Jr.

"Boys have at it" What makes you think NASCAR wants the squeaky clean image? Sure they want their drivers to be professional and likeable but they know the squeaky clean image isn't what attracts fans. Hell look at all the criminals making millions in the NFL and NBA. Just because you are sponsored by alcohol doesn't make you a bad person. The bad people are the ones who abuse the product.

....and if Steve Kinser were offered a similiar deal by Marlboro there would be a thread about how cool it is that multi million dollar company is acknowledging the king of our sport. Man, there are some bitter/jealous dirt track fans out there.

carl....I think, for what it is worth, that once Winston notified NASCAR they were dropping their sponsorship NASCAR suddenly became a "goody-two-shoes" about tobacco. You notice they have allowed "hard liquor" on cars and we all know alcohol doesn't cause ANY problem(s)! Wink

If alcohol was outlawed, only OUTLAWS would have alcohol. Hey, there may be some marketing in that.......
