After watching/reading this forum for a number of years now, I've come to the conclusion that I am a poor excuse for a sprint car fan.

Why do I say that, you ask?

Let me enumerate the ways:

1) In almost 60 years of attending sprint car races, I can only remember booing a driver once.

2) I have never wished for a driver to drop out of a race; not even due to minor mechanical
problems, let alone due to a crash.

3) I have never cheered when a driver crashed.

4) When somebody is moving through the field and toward the front, I will cheer them
on, even when they're passing one of my more "favorite" drivers. And if they get to the front, I'll be cheering for the guy behind them to mount a challenge. It's all about the action for me.

5) I like sprint car racing in every form; winged, nonwinged, 410's, 360's, 305's, and whatever other configuration you want to throw in there. (And I love the midgets too.)

6) I would gladly attend a sprint car race in any part of the U.S.

7) All of this PA Posse vs. Outlaws vs. California drivers vs. USAC, etc. crap makes me tired. I have no time (or patience) for any of it.

8) I have no interest in knowing all the details about drivers' personal lives. It's none of my business, and I have enough trouble taking care of my own business. I just want to enjoy watching them wheel a sprint car for the evening.

9) I have never posted a derogatory comment about any driver, track, etc. (I did rant on Dirt Vision once, which I later apologized for.)

10) I'm not a "hanger-on" in the pits, although I do try to seek out and tell as many drivers, pit crewmen, and owners as possible thanks for coming out and racing so that old guys like me can be entertained.

11) I've never complained about ticket or concession prices. Everything is expensive. Priced a concert ticket lately? Even for a mediocre band?

12) I don't care if the car is running a Chevy, Ford, MoPar or John Deere engine.

13) I don't care about XXX frames. It's a world economy and has been for about a decade or so at least now. Heck, even some of the produce in my local grocery store comes from China. There's nothing you can do about it, so you might as well get over it.

I could go on, but I think you get the point. I'm a pretty lame excuse for a fan.

Priced a concert ticket lately

Blundy...I recently read on the internet, so it must be true, that some "rock group" had tickets priced at $650.00...and they sold out! Now, it did not say how many but regardless...$650.00 to hear a bunch of old guys sing off key, words you can't understand and then trip over their rocker's as they leave the stage? No thanks. Wink

Jerry was, and is, a great human being, as was his wife, Marge. I've never heard anybody say anything but good about Jerry. I was by no means a friend of either of them, just a huge fan. And they were both always very nice to me when we had the occasion to correspond with one another or to visit in the pits. I will always have great memories of them both. Thanks, Jerry. You'll always be my hero, even if I live to be 100!

Wish I had written that! I'm not much of a fan either, I guess. I have my favorite drivers, but more than anything, I enjoy good competitive racing. I like speed, but better than that is watching a driver set up to make a pass, or save a car from crashing when it looks like he is sure to go for a ride. Wings and non-wings each have something to offer, and the competition can be just as good with the smaller cars (including midgets, quarter midgets, etc.) on appropriate sized tracks. I've even enjoyed a door banger race or two when they were actually racing and not wrecking. Put it on dirt, and I'll find something to enjoy! And, yes, Jerry Blundy was a heck of a driver all the years I watched him at Knoxville when I was growing up!

This is what a TRUE sprint car racing fan is like. We need a lot more like this person.

have you considered becoming a promoter? no, I take that back, becoming involved in one aspect or the other routinely ruins a good fan, unless you have magical habits, Ice cold viens, and take nothing to heart, then you should apply! Knox has a opening!,

really tho, I think this post has been needed for quite some time, most of us wish to carry these habits you write about, but, its easier said than done, driver preferances, geographical locations, manufacture prefferances all seem to wieght in the minds of the traditional fan, (which is ok, honestly, id rather be locked in a elevator with ten sprint fans booing me than one nascar fan) I dont care if your "poor" in the wallet, you hold great "value" to our tradition, please pass it on to your next generation and to whom you sit at the supper table with , it would be greatly appreciated.. 90% of us would agree, and if you dont? ,well, you know your place then ..

Like what you wrote. You pretty much described me also. But I can remember booing two drivers, Sammy being one of them, during almost 60 years of going to the races.

well stated, I agree w you on most points. the exception being #8. I like to find out a bit more about the people we idolize, like what some of their other interests are. in fact I wish there was more content of this nature. unfortunately we live in the mass media paranoid tight-lipped interview era. too many people just waiting for the littlest thing to criticize. also, if they're a philandering, spouse-beating, alcoholic, that might prevent me from cheering for them! I still wouldn't boo though. I save booing for the opposing team at a packers/bucks/brewers game. :D other than that, 'thanks for coming out!"

Sir, you should be ashamed of yourself. How dare you keep such an honest, unbiased, and all around pleasant demeanor about a sport that should be conducted like pro wrestling. Matter of fact, I'm hopping on twitter and a few other forms of social media and starting a huge rant about Kyle Larson and his Pa fan club. That'll teach everyone a lesson! No, seriously Blundy fan, I've come to find that at least 85% of sprint car fans feel and carry themselves as you do, which is the way it should be. The small percent who dampen a night at the races are the same ones who spew their pointless hate babble on this damn forum. Anyhow take care and maybe we'll cross paths sometime, would'nt know you if i saw you though! lol
