Just finished reading an old "back ordered issue" of Sprint Car & Midget magazine. This is July 2003 issue:
"to win sometimes you have to take chances, and do things that maybe you shouldn't do and hope they work out. Sometimes they don't work out".
The interview begins with Rich sitting at his kitchen table:
"occasionally interrupted by the phone, one call for some PR work, another from his mother Eleanor, he was animated as he talked about his past and excited as he spoke of his future in the sport he loved. Four days later, Rich Vogler was dead". Then interviewer continues:
He had qualified for a NASCAR Winston Cup race at Pocono on Saturday morning and had flown back to Indiana for a USAC sprint car show at Salem that evening. On the last lap, while leading, he touched wheels with another car. As quick as the early morning mist rolls over those southern Indiana hills, and then melts away with the first ray of sun, he was gone.
It was tough to read this story about an often loved and as often hated man due to his desire to win and only win---no matter the cost.
171 USAC feature wins, raced in 5 Indy 500s in not the best equipment with a best finish of 9th, and I think just getting started in his NASCAR career with 3 or 4 starts.
