Has anyone seen what the payout was for the IRL race at IAS? I wonder if it even came close to what the K'ville Nat'ls pays. I found the traffic problems interesting in that fans must have thought they just drive up to gates and walk to their seats. Most have been to a Hawkeye or Cyclone game and surely start their day out early enough to be part of the party and still make it for the kickoff. We have about 30K fans show up for our Nat'ls and don't have big massive parking areas and fans still manage to make the show. I guess maybe they have 47 yrs of training/experience to where they are on time.
I doubt IAS could handle more then 19 race teams as they travel in style. The team traveling diner tents alone took up the entire area south of the garage. Don't think a 20th team could have been accomodated unless they took over more of the road course area. It does remind you of a circus minus the elephants. Lotza important people running around.

The payout was slightly higher than the entire 4 day Nationals purse.

IRL brings 19 cars.
Knoxville brings 100+ for the nationals.
There's no comparison for me. The Knoxville Nationals is the greatest spectical in auto racing.

I wish people would bombard the local TV sportscasters in Des Moines about what is...and always has been...the biggest motorsport event in Iowa, The Knoxville Nationals.
Just do a search for the stations and email links to Keith Murphy at WHO-TV Channel 13, Heidi Soliday, KCCI-TV Channel 8 and John Walters, WOI-TV Channel 5.
I've never seen a more bogus disregard of the facts pertaining to what is and isn't a meaningful event that deserves coverage than what I saw and heard last week.
This is nothing against Iowa Speedway. They did what they needed to do to be successful. It's a great place and a worthwhile investment to attend a race. But, these clowns in the local mainstream media (sports and news), should never be allowed to call themselves journalists again after the way the gushed all over themselves calling the IRL event "the most important and the biggest motorsports event ever in Iowa".
Will Keith Murphy and channel 13 provide any coverage of the Knoxville Nationals? I quote him "No, because the mainstream audience doesn't care about it and Ashley Judd and Gene Simmons won't be there. It's not that big a deal" That's a direct quote, folks.
35,800 announced at Newton. Attendance dropping at Knoxville. Gee, I wonder why. Wall-to-wall coverage on every newscast for a week. Milka Duno becomes a star.
I'm pissed about it. You should be to.

How much advertising did the IRL purchase, if any,
on the Des Moines TV stations? How much paid advertisment time
does the Knoxville Nationals buy on the Des Moines TV
Stations? The amount of coverage may be in direct proportion to the dollar spent on advertisement.
The
former TV analyst and former track promoter, Steve Evans, once told the
race teams at OCIR that if he wanted media coverage for his events, he
needed to purchase ad space. He bought ad space, he received
print and electronic coverage.

Personally I hate the Indy Recking League and don't watch on TV.
The media see's there races as events and that's where the draw comes from. How many of the 35,000 people are actual race fans and attend regular dirt track races? My guess 4000 to 5000.The rest are just want to be's!
Somehow Knoxville needs to create some hype, like a rivalery between Billy Alley and Brian Brown. Maybe take some lessons from the WWF. Since McCarl's gone they have no bad guy on a
weekly basis to boo. Sad but true.

I agree about spending money on advertising is how to get coverage. I'm just saying the mainstream media people are no better than the whores on 6th Avenue in Des Moines if they will prostitute their own credibility. They are not journalists and should not be considered as such.

In looking at the very first question posted on this topic, I'm a lil surprised someone tried to compare the two purses. After all, the IRL Iowa race wasnt its 'super bowl' event. Now, comapare the 'super bowls' of both series and my fellow race fans, NOW we have a decisive difference. All that said, if the two were in the same town, same night, ran at the same time and BOTH were their respective 'super bowl' events, I'm drinking dirt in my beer!

(Note to self. . . . .6th Avenue. . . . Des Moines. . . . )
Oh, excuse me. I have to agree. Down here in Houston, the local papers are falling all over themselves when the Houston Grand Prix fiasco has their little rally in the Astrodome Parking lot. The even always loses money, and the folks are coming to see the beach volleyball, anyway. What happens when the Outlaws, or ASCS come to town (hey, it is the only sprint car racing we have down here)? No press at all. To be fair, not a whole lot of advertising from the track either.

Don't expect Heidi to ever come to K'ville for the races. All she cares about is the HAWKEYES and maybe the Cyclones. She had to start covering UNI when she showed up, expecting to be treated like a queen at their playoff game a few years ago, and they wouldn't give her credentials, telling her if you don't cover us during the regular season, why should we let you in now. It was good seeing her stand outside giving the updates. I had some tell me she has contacted the track twice and those were when someone was killed. Maybe she should only cover Hawkeye & Cyclone football or bouncey ball, when one (I should say many { lets have a moment of silence for Pierre}) of the players that are thrown in jail. Same difference.
Knoxville needs to get the media down here and get them excited about the major races. IAS spares no bucks courting them. Politicans & diginitaries are everywhere on race day. In case you haven't got that part of it figured out, they have money or access to it. Money makes the world go around, not love like found on 6th Ave.

John,
While I agree that Knoxville doesn't get enough coverage. Keith is correct. The Mainstream does not care. IRL in Newton was the biggest motorsports event in IA ever (Live TV on a MAJOR network, 35,000 in attendance, traffic issues, Indy 500 winners, a Mainstream Movie Actress that is married to a driver, a rock star from a band that virtually everyone has heard of (anyone between the age of 15-60)).
I think the Nationals are great, those that attend think it's great, Racing People think it's great. I try to promote it to people that have never attended all the time, but badgering a guy on TV isn't going to help. The Raceway needs to send FREE tickets to each TV station every single week (why do you think all the people from the newstations were so pumped about the IRL race?), send e-mail updates to the Sports Directors every single week (DVD's or streaming video of the highlights of the races. ADVERTISE on each station DURING the news, not at 3:00 AM when no one is watching.
As far as the direct quote goes. I heard that on SoundOff when you called last week. You are the one that came off as being arrogant and defensive. Keith just told it like it is and you missed his other comments because you were being so defensive. He said that Knoxville was being overlooked and that was a shame. DO MORE LISTENING AND LESS BITCHING.
Andy Fales (before he went to KC) and Keith have always responded to e-mail in a very positive way everytime I have contacted them. The Nationals is not helped by it being the same time as the State Fair either. Andy replied to an e-mail last year that he wanted to do a live remote from K'ville all week and was shot down by those above Keith because they wanted everyone @ the Fair because IT is THE news story. Everything else takes a back seat those 10 days.
Just my $.02
