I came to Iowa this weekend for a wedding on Friday. I had nothing to do Saturday night and with no sprint cars in the area I decided to check out the IMCA super nationals in Boone. Arriving on the scene the area and facilities were underwhelming. The racing however AMAZING!!! I'm a sprint car guy beyond any doubt but I was blown away by the show You could have tossed a blanket over the top 5 in every race all day and night. While the amenities at Boone may be shall we say meager the race surface was lightning. Why in the world are they not running WoO shows there?? Anyway just my thoughts as a sprint car fan. Let the "taxi cab" bashing begin
More weight, more regulation, more similarity in the
cars.... that will ensure plenty of thrills for years
to come. Only the most average talent behind the
wheel will be needed with such awesome equipment on
the track!

I'm pretty sure it was 1980 when the WoO was at Boone, regardless of the exact year, Gary Scott of Holts Summit, MO won his only WoO event there that night.

After attending the SuperNationals around 15 times over the years (including one year at Independence before it moved to Boone), if you are a race fan, you will not find any better, or any more racing, for your money over the 6 day span.

Now, if you're a fan that only likes sprint cars, then it will be the longest 6 days of your life.

Or, you may just find yourself actually liking something other than just sprint cars when you take the time to meet some of the drivers or getting a closer look at what's underneath those 'taxi cab' body panels.

There's a lot of advanced technology and many, many truly talented dirt track drivers.

Last night's winner was Jeff Taylor from Arkansas (who is a long-time LM and mod driver & chassis builder) and topped a field of 250 other modified drivers.

It was his first trip ever there, and he said in victory lane "I've never cried after winning a race, but I am now." He was truly overwhelmed by winning the race - even though it didn't pay nearly as much as a dozen or so of his other big event wins in his career.

He took the lead on lap 39 of 40 after biding his time, missing an earlier wreck, and saving his equipment.

I'm a fan of about any type of racing, as long as there's not unnecessary yellows, decent car counts and the show runs at a brisk pace. So I like the races there.

Glad you had a good time, and I would encourage others to check it out if you have a chance...over 860 teams competed throughout the 6 day event with a reported 12,000 people on hand for the final night. Grandstand tickets for all 6 days cost just $110.

I'm a sprint car guy too, but find it is good to like many different forms of racing. I love attending a modified or dirt late model show and I still turn on the TV for the Nascar race every week. I will even watch an Indy car race if I am flipping through the channels and find one. Only thing I don't get is Formula 1, but each to his/her own. But, I do find many different kinds of racing entertaining including 300 mph straight lines. It's good to be open minded. Have attended some very exciting Nascar races in my life (believe it or not) and some pretty dull sprint car races. That being said, sprint car racing is main racing I go to see these days but I am open to almost anything.

You should have seen the motorcycles at Knoxville last night. Quite a show. Shayna Texter won the Pro class again for a repeat of last year. Still, the only woman to win a feature here. A real good show and run very, very well.
My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

Guys, thanks for your comments. It is such a pleasure to read positive posts about various forms of racing. For most on here, I am sure it would be sprint cars but there are some great shows put on by other types of cars and your posts prove that. Way to go! Smile

Taylor set up and executed that pass for the win with perfection. That was a show. So glad I went ! Anyone have any idea the $$$ amount they auction the engines for. I would have like to stuck around and see that.

We wet there when Knoxville rained out around 2004-5 or so,and we were bored and looking for something to do. So we got the "good book" out,aka the National Speedway directory, and started making phone calls. They were running,so 4 of us piled in my van and thats where we went. We had a great night of racing, despite not knowing a single soul that was racing there. It was very well run,and I think admission was like $7 or $8 to get in.

We all decided it would be a great place for a traditional sprint car race. If they ever get USAC to go there while out west,I'll be there too !
