The past few weeks have been better than the past two years. Lets hope it continues. Chico isnt known for having a great surface for three days in a row especially when it involves the WoO. I have heard many racers say the WoO are the reason for the usual dry condition.

Already here and set up camp completing the Knoxville/Gold Cup exacta. Trophy Cup and the $50k Calistoga 360 deal are next.

Chico used to be among the top three tracks in the country for shooting wheelstands. John Padjen always worked that track, some days for hours at a time, much like Earl used to do at the Big E.
I remember about a decade or so ago talking with John in the infield when Ted Johnston told him to put some god damn trucks on the track and run it in better just before the A-Main on a Saturday night final. John said sure, no problem and put them out there to run it in and then came over to me laughing and stated that all they were gonna do is bring up the moisture from below and boy was he right! Sammy started on the pole with a massive wheelstand and when he came down he was in 3rd place, one of my all-time favorite shots as well. I think my all-time favorite sprint shot is one of TK doing a wheelstand after winning a race there and local shooter John (I forget his name) getting the ultimate wheelie shot. Sure gonna miss Gold Cup, again......

mspn...probably John Meierhofer (sp) of John's Photos. Last I heard John was shooting USAC out here on the "left" coast. I hear, since John Padjen left, track conditions at Chico, for the most part, have been horrible. For the sake of the fans, I hope this is not true for the Gold Cup. Just sorry I can't be there.
Have fun!

Yes, that's the man, great guy. Stupid me was clapping for Tim's win just a few feet from John at the time and he took the shot, my favorite of all-time....

Several years back I was with him at Chico and he talked "briefly" about returning to his roots in Wisconsin. Wonder if he ended up there. Sorry to hear he is out of the business. He was a great track photographer and an even better human being. I wish him the best wherever he is.
