Breaking News: USAC Penalizes Levi Jones for Kokomo Incident by Chris McWilliams on August 27, 2012 Email Facebook Twitter Print Comments (0) Levi Jones A scary incident during the closing laps of the feature event of last weekend’s USAC “Sprint Car Smackdown” at Kokomo Speedway has led to officials of The United States Auto Club (USAC) handing down penalties to one of the series most successful drivers. The incident that led to the penalties started when Levi Jones made contact with Jon Stanbrough at the end of the front-stretch. The contact sent Stanbrough nearly head-on into the pit entrance gate at the start of turn one. Stanbrough’s car flipped violently back into oncoming racers where it was struck by Robert Ballou which caused his sprint car to flip as well and have the throttle stick wide open. Chad Boespflug was also collected in the huge incident. Luckily, all drivers exited their cars with only Ballou leaving in an ambulance to receive treatment at a local hospital. After the incident Stanbrough walked down the front-stretch to have a little talk with Jones about what happened. After the race series officials spoke with both Jones and Stanbrough about the incident. Officials also collected accounts of the incident from attending officials, eyewitness accounts, and track officials. The information collected led USAC officials to penalize Jones for on-track contact deemed to be avoidable and producing a dangerous situation for fellow competitors under section 10.28 of the competition rules. As a result, Jones will be placed under probation for the balance of the National Sprint Car season, with the understanding that further infractions could lead to more severe punishment. Also, Jones and his team will be docked 25 championship points going into the next series’ event at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Illinois this Friday, August 31st.

Any video Kenny? Levi does not have the rep of doing things like that, I would guess something got him fired up. Not that there is an excuse there, but I just want to understand because those two guys have raced together a lot and I am sure they respect each other.

"Levi Jones is calling it a season. Levi has been dealing with neck pain resulting from having three herniated discs in his neck. Recently, Levi spent a day with surgeons to get evaluated and it was determined that surgery can't be put off any longer. Surgery is scheduled for next week with a expected recovery of 12 weeks, thus ending his 2012 campaign."

Not commenting on Levi's driving, but from what I can gather, many guys have not been happy about Levi's driving for year.

If this is true will TSR put a relief driver in for the rest of season to try and win the owners points ? And who would it be ? I vote for Kyle L . Or Ryan B.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

Id vote for Robert Ballou. That wreck destroyed his new engine and tore up the car.

Kyle has many bigger commitments already this year and rumor has Chris Windom in the seat of the TSR#20

How many times has Ballou put someone on their head from a bonehead move of his own and tore up his and other driver's equipment? I doubt he offered up his ride to Darland at the Oval Nat's for the bad slider he threw in turn 4. #justsayin

He got into someone else at the ovals too I think. Bad sliders and bonehead moves are one thing, running someone in the fence intentionally is something else.
Im sure Chris Windom will do well with that team.

Yep. I'm guessing there are about 25-30 guys not happy about his driving for about the last 5 years. I watched the video Sylvia posted (thanks!) and like she says you can't see the wreck. I am not an apologist for Levi Jones, what ever he did or did not do is on him to own, but there have been a lot of very successful drivers in this sport that pushed their way around at times. I don't view Levi that way. It kinda seems like he was having a bad night though, maybe he does need his *&$ kicked, but either way it's fun to talk about. Jon looked mad as a hornet, I would not want any part of that guy... have a safe weekend all. Enjoy the races

Holy cow and wow. You can penalize someone for avoidable contact in a non wing sprint car race. OMG the liberal lawyers have found us. I guess we're going to have to put turn signals and brake lights on them now.

Wrong Harry, a liberal lawyer would defend him and a conservative one would prosecute.

If I had wings I'd fly right up Randy. Assistant DA's are my favorite, their usualy so eager to move up, they screw up. This is just hearsay Randy, so it can't be used against me, right?

Levi kind of left a bad taste in my mouth last year, and I'm not alone on that. He was bad mouthing the facilities at Canyon while putting our money in his pocket. OK, there certainly not the best, but it still showed a lack of class on his part.
