I do agree however that there were some pretty badly times commercial breaks on SPEED----especially with 6 laps to go.....c'mnon man!!! Even tho I watched it/broadcast it live I was getting very excited again watching it as Brown chased down Schatz.......then 5 minutes of commercials....then back for 5 quick laps-----really killed the excitement........Brad Doty as always was awesome.....but I do feel they missed alot of the action on the screen....focused on the big names only.....had in car camera going on Brown when he jumped the cushion....couldnt even tell he did it...and I agree....Dobmeier and Heskin were the biggest movers and hardly got mentioned or shown

Well - *technically* - Johnny was calling the races live on the DirtVision internet-cast... all week.

dirtvision?? Why listen to that when you could attend or WATCH on Turn2Media?

It's still a joke for those that were actually ATTENDING the race. Inserting an announcer and acting like it's what the crowd heard is INSULTING to your paying fans.

I like Johnny fine and if he was calling the race over the PA system it wouldn't have bothered me to have it as part of the broadcast. But to put it in there just because it's an "outlaw" race doesn't do it for me.

The other thing I would say is this. If this truely was the World of Outlaws Knoxville Nationals (which is how the billed it on the TV commercials), why didn't the paying fans get to listen to Johnny on the PA?? Is it because the Outlaw name was only there so the Outlaws can sell a big event to sponsors like STP??

I'm just glad they had it on TV. Thanks Speed! Some of you would bitch if you got $100 bill and you wanted five $20s instead....geez

Anyone know the actual reason as to why JG wasn't calling the race?
My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

For whatever reason Johnny wasn't allowed to do the P.A. for Nationals....so he was in the same suite as us (KNIA/KRLS) every night and was doing Dirt Vision each night.....The "You wanted the best...you got the best" call that was used on the Speed delayed broadcast was done LIVE by Johnny....just not over the P.A.....They ran a bunch of cords into the suite and timed it so he could do it for them

As a broadcaster just let me say this......This isn't NASCAR or NFL or anything like that where any of us broadcasters/announcers have 5-6 spotters/assistants helping us with info or anything else--I was at a NASCAR race last year and rented a scanner headset to listen to drivers----instead I listened to the announcers in the booth and every one of them had a producer assigned to them that was feeding them info and questions to ask during interviews the entire broadcast--Here its generally up to us-----I know myself and my partner do everything ourselves on the radio broadcast with no outside assistance.....That being said everyone seems to think its so easy to do what we do.....24 cars---140mph---1/2 mile track-----occasionally we do mis speak as we have 100 things going through our head as were speaking plus trying to watch the action......its NOT easy....no matter how long you've done it ....It doesnt mean the person is an idiot or doesnt know anything about racing.....and for those of you that like to point out EVERY little mistake any of us make----I'd say come to the booth....grab the mic and have at it!!! You'll see it's not so easy and even the MOST knowledgable people will make mistakes.....After all we are HUMAN..... We are ALL doing this because we LOVE sprint car racing....want to see it continue to grow and want to bring as much attention to the sport as we can-----simple as that!!!

Sprintcarfan1 I think you guys do a great job given all the drivers that are there that you know little or nothing about. So Kudos to you guys. But what does bother me is why is it when someone gets passed the anouncer says that the person who just got passed is on the move and challenging, when he actually is going backwards. Huh? Are you watching the same race as I am? As a fan that makes the anouncer look like he doesn't know what he is talking about.

Just my .02 as a fan.

Judd and yourself do a good job for what you have to work with (no help except you two and the roving pit reporters, heck, you guys have to throw it back to the studio for commercials don't you? I EXPECT an occasional mistake from you because outside of sponsors, I'd guess that it's a $$ losing proposition for the Radio Station and yourselves. And you hold down REGULAR jobs the rest of the year. The TV guys do this for a LIVING.

From a Cable TV company that PRODUCES auto racing shows YEAR ROUND and gets PAID to do it, I EXPECT a lot more. They talked about Joey Saldana cutting through the field as he got PASSED by 3 cars, Dobmier on the top, Heskin and another car on the bottom. Since the race was tape delayed, the had ALL of the tape at their disposal and we see an in-car camera shot? of Brown jumping the cushion (and you couldn't tell anything happened except he let off the gas) instead of the film of his car ACTUALLY jumping the cushion?

Speed and the WoO dropped the ball in my opinion, This is the BIGGEST race of the entire season and they use it to sell to sponsors, make announcements, etc., and then treat the actual broadcast of the race as a secondhand thought (the 1 hour broadcasts and the Live shows from Lowes (when they are editing as the show is ran and broadcast) are done better.

What happened to the days of 1 camera on the lead pack and another camera following the action in the field so you could edit it and talk about something other than "Schatz continues to lead, we'll be right back". That's what the old tape delayed TNN days had, they didn't do ANY commentary until they edited the film and added the commentary. They still did the pit interviews and such, but the shows were MUCH better put together.

But, still better than last year when they had a red flag for a crash, showed the cars stopped on the track, went to commercial, came back and talked to the wrecked driver and showed cars rolling around under caution, went back to commercial and then showed cars beginning to push off after the Red Flag was pulled back.

Seemed like such a WASTE of good on-air talent like Sheheen, Doty, Gerould and Bokhoven.

Maybe I'll send the WRG a copy of my TNN 1990 Nationals broadcast. The camera angles, storytelling, pit interviews, etc., etc. were all better than this years broadcast.

The whole thing is shoddy. The only reason there's even mention of a WoO sanction is because WoO takes care of TV. We must remember that the purpose of this broadcast isn't to show actual racing, but to sell sponsors and storylines that Knoxville/WoO want to sell. The actual racing coverage is secondary.

Frankly, Shaheen, Doty, Gerould and Bokhoven really aren't that good, it's just that nobody else with any experience wants the job. The talant pool is quite shallow.

The whole thing is stupid. If you can't carry the race live then don't do it at all, or turn it over to someone who can. If the cheapskates on the MC Fairboard think live TV is the reason for declining attendence, they might want to re-evaluate their product. It's not 1960's anymore, people aren't going to watch something already weeks old. Any other sport that has live TV INCREASES its audience. Live TV does not detract from it at all.

Doty, Gerould, and Bokhoven know their stuff when it comes to sprint car racing and considering tv isnt a full time gig for them i'd say their pretty good. I like Shaheen but you can tell he's been away from sprint car racing too long.

Producers are what ruin the broadcast. Unlike NASCAR, no matter where you see a sprint car race, nobody can have enough knowledge about all the drivers when each track has its heavy hitters and cinderella stories. With that said, hire just one person to do research on different drivers since its a post production anyway.

IMO put Argabright, and Reiff in the pits and Bokhoven, Doty, and Gerould in the booth.

Outside of Bruce Ellis, there is no more informed announcer than Johnny Gibson.

And Bokhoven does a good job on Speed, but in the booth at the actual race, there is nobody I have ever heard that is more misinformed than him.

That said, I sure was impressed by Henry Cap this year at Knoxville. haha

The Henry Cap comment was actually Blake Anderson. The job is not as easy and glamorous as everyone believes.

Not to belabor the point, but there was only one henry cap moment I heard this year, but a ton the year before, and both Tony and Blake were guilty. Tony is fine as the master of ceremonies, but needs a strong knowledge guy in the booth with him, like Gibson, Ellis. Just my opinion.

Jason Price made the first Henry Cap comment last year and since then its been kind of a floating joke. I've even caught myself calling him that.

Good grief what a bunch of complainers. Would it be better they not do a TV broadcast at all? I was happy to catch it on TV and watch it all over again and could care less if Gibson really didn't do his deal over the PA to the fans.

Frankly, sprint777 is STILL a moron and still making moronic comments. Dude, do you think people are impressed with your constant put downs of everyone and everything. Seriously, identify yourself if you think you're that great, most of us in this forum need a good laugh and that would be the best of the week methinks.

Are you just trying to look like a fool or are you really that STUPID when you call Brad and Bobby 'not that good'? What affect are you going for, lol? The first thought out of anyone's mind is 'dang, is this guy clueless' which you manage to do with most of your posts so it most certainly must be true, here's your sign.....

Where have you been the last 10 years....

LIVE TV has KILLED the crowd on Saturday nights, that's whey they dropped live TV you moron.

I sat by many people that only came on Wednesday and Thursday night, drove home Friday and then watched the finale @ home on the couch on Saturday. How does that INCREASE your audience?

The crowds are slowly building back up since they went back to tape delay (despite Schatz's dominance of the event).

What "other" sports are you referring to? College BB and FB? NBA, NFL or NHL? NASCAR? One thing those sports have in common, they get PAID by the networks to broadcast. Knoxville or the WoO has to PAY the TV group to broadcast the race. So, let's use your logic and have WoO or Knoxville spend $400,000 to produce a Live show for the Nationals and have 3-4000 PAYING CUSTOMERS leave the track to watch it for FREE @ home on TV (that makes a lot of sense).

As far as the comments about Shaheen, Doty, Gerould and Bokhoven go, I'll ask you this. Who do you suggest they hire? Eli Gold (he was horrible on TNN when he did it), Mike Joy (he was good in the Slick 50 days, but he had great color guys in the booth with him (Doty, Jeff Swindell, Wolfgang)), Leigh Diffy (he can't even read a script, let alone broadcast a form of racing he knows nothing about).

Please continue to show your arrogance and ignorance...
