POPULAR "HUBCAP MIKE" COLLINS WINS FIRST SPRINT CAR MAIN!

(Perris, CA, August 22, 2012) Lake Forest, California's Mike Collins led every inch of the way and scored the first ever Sprint Car win of his career in the PAS Senior Sprint Car Series before an appreciative crowd last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway.

Affectionately known as "Hubcap Mike" to spectators and fellow racers, Collins started on the pole in his flashy #04 car in the 20-lap main event. Once the green flew to begin the festivities, the 55-year-old racer took a different line than the one he normally runs up by the cushion. Collins glued himself to the pole and did not stray from that spot the entire way.

Bruce Douglass, who had won three of the first six main events of the year, took up the chase at the outset and he had Chris Wakim, who won the first ever VRA main at The PAS ten years ago this month, right behind.

While Douglass, who turned 62-years-old two days after the race, was trying to knife his way by Collins on the inside, Wakim was going to the outside to try and steal second from Douglass. That line bit Wakim when he came off turn two on lap four and got up on the outside wall. Making his PAS Senior Sprint debut, Wakim brought the car down off the wall and kept on going.

Douglass continually tried to slip by Collins on the inside. Several times he pulled alongside on the straights. However, Collins always edged him back to the corner where he kept it stuck to the bottom to maintain the lead in the crowd-pleasing race.

Wakim eventually took Douglass for second on lap 17 and like Douglass the previous 16 laps, he took shots at Collins all the way to the checkered, but Collins was up to the challenge and drove on to his first win.

When Collins brought his car to a stop on the front straight after the race that went all 20-laps with a yellow or a red, he drew a nice round of applause from the appreciative fans. Once he got out of the car, the emotional driver told the fans, "This is a race I wanted to win for about four years." He then added with a laugh, "I think I am going to go home and cry."

Ironically, it was not Collins' first ever win at The PAS. About 10 years ago he won a Street Stock main on the famous Riverside County half-mile oval. Earlier in the day, Collins' son won a Go-Kart main at the nearby Perris Speedway track.

Wakim, in the beautiful Steve Watt Enterprises #18, won the heat race earlier in the show.

Douglass came into the show tied for the point lead with 2011 champ Bill Badger of Santa Clarita. Douglass second place finish combined with Badger's fourth place outing means Douglass has a three point lead as the 2012 campaign get close to the end. Davis is third, just 21 points behind the leader.

With the season winding down, Collins, Davis, Douglass, Badger, Ed Schwarz and Wiley Miller are all eligible to win a 777 Chassis. The winner will be drawn at the final race of the year and drivers who made every race or just missed one will be eligible.

The entire 2012 PAS schedule is listed at the end of this release.
